Tetsurō shook his head in defeat and sat up beside her.

"Is it girl trouble?" She asked, reaching up to try and tame his mess of hair. She wasn't a particularly short woman, but she still had to reach significantly to be able to touch the back of his head.

Tetsurō huffed. "Is this your explanation for everything?"

"This coming from the man who claims every girl in school pines over him," She raised her eyebrow.

"Not every girl," Tetsurō said, resigning himself to the fact that his mom would read into his words.

"Ha! I was right," His mom exclaimed, shoving him in the shoulder and almost knocking him face first onto the floor. "Details, baby, give momma some details,"

"Her name is Rini Yamazaki." Tetsurō gave in finally.

His mom scooted to sit facing him, prepared to listen.

Tetsurō inhaled. "I have a crush on her and she hates me because I'm a jock,"

"Out of all the reasons she could hate you she chose that?"

"Can we try to exercise a little bit of sensitivity in this discussion?"

"Yes, sorry. Continue,"

"She's popular but not like I am—people like her because she's respectable and mature, you know?"

"What does she look like?"

"She's really short; she comes up till here on me," Tetsurō indicated below his shoulder with his hand held horizontally. "She has a button nose and pretty blue eyes, and she has dimples when she smiles. She's so beautiful but modest about it, like she doesn't want people to look at her too much." He felt his cheeks heat up when he mentioned her eyes.

His mom only smiled.

"Even though she's flirted with me in the past, I'm pretty damn sure she hates me...maybe she's one of those girls who plays hard to get just to see how long she can keep a guy's attention,"

"Maybe, but I get the feeling you would have caught onto that,"

"Yeah..." Tetsurō knew she was right. Yamazaki wasn't that kind of girl.

She didn't realize she was hurting him, and that might have been what hurt the worst. But Tetsurō tried hard to push those thoughts from his mind. He wanted to give himself some time to process this. More then that, he wanted to grant Yamazaki the space she had asked for.

"You'll figure it out. You're a smart guy and I know you don't think about this stuff lightly," His mom was saying.

He felt a faint smile grow against his lips. His mom knew him better then anyone, and she knew exactly what he needed to hear.

He felt better now.

He was figuring it out.
