New Beginnings. We all have them at different points in our lives. Whether it's starting a new school, meeting new people or moving to a new house. They give people the opportunity to start afresh. Not the New Year's Day, new year new me cliché that never works out. It's more like the type of beginning where you can give different first impressions on people as they don't know what you've done or who you are. You can get rid of all the toxicity that's in your life and make your life the best it can be.
This is what is running through my head as I carry the last box of my stuff up the steps to my flat. I haven't had the best past in my short 22 years of living. I made friends with the wrong people, made bad decisions when I didn't think about the consequences, I'd even fallen in love with the wrong person but that's all behind me now. That's what I'm hoping anyway.
"Are you sure you'll be alright on your own Dy?" Cody asks me.
"I'll be fine. I practically lived alone for the last year anyway the only difference is this is a completely new town. Don't worry about me." I say nudging my brother playfully.
"If you're sure then I'm gonna have to leave you be, seeing as though the missus is at home waiting for my return and it's an hour's drive. Remember don't do anything stupid and call me regularly." He says giving me a hug.
"Don't worry I won't do anything you would do. No need to turn into a mother, that's not your job. Anyway, you need to go. You can't leave Hannah waiting for too long." I smirk as I close the door after he walks out.
Let me introduce myself. I'm Melody and I'm 22 and just moved an hour away from my hometown. Why? Well, I couldn't stay there any longer. You could argue that I'm running away from my past but I couldn't stand that place anymore. It's horrible walking around town knowing that you could bump into your ex and your ex-best friend anywhere. My last job was nice but it was annoying having to teach the children of people you used to go to school with. When the job in this town opened up, which was perfect for me, I had to take it. At least people don't know who I am here.
I decide to go out and grab myself a coffee before I start unpacking, seeing as though my kettle is hidden somewhere in the many boxes that are scattered across the floor. I grab my bag and my phone and lock the door behind me. Luckily there is a coffee shop just up the road from my building. I open the door of the coffee shop and walk in however I accidentally bump into a young boy.
"I'm so sorry hunny. I didn't see you there." I say whilst helping the little boy up. "Where's your parents?"
"My daddy is just over there." He says pointing to the man who's now walking towards us.
"I'm so sorry about my son. I told him to wait for me but he felt like running out." The man says. He can't be older than 30 seeing as though he looks like Cody's age. He is slightly tan and has dark hair which is slightly curly. He's very tall and now that he's stood next to me he is towering over me.
"Oh no, it's completely my fault I wasn't looking where I was going." I smile at him.
"My names Jake. It's nice to meet you." He smiles at me holding out his hand.
"Melody. Nice to meet you too." I say shaking his hand.
"that's a beautiful name. Sorry to cut this short but I got to take this little mischief-maker to get a haircut. I'll see you around." Jake says.
"Yeah see you around," I reply before he walks out the door. I go to the counter and order a mocha to take away before heading home to start unpacking.
I start with my kitchen area as I put my cutlery and plates away in cupboards safely and unpack the food that Cody had helped me buy on the way here. I will go out later and buy food for the fridge before dinner.
Once the kitchen is unpacked I head to my room to put away my clothes and make my bed. I'm just about to start putting my books on my shelf when my phone starts ringing. I grab it and see that Cody is trying to FaceTime me so I answer the call.
"How's my little sister doing with her unpacking?" He asks as his face shows up on my screen.
"I'm doing great thanks bro. I'm almost finished as I only have my books to put away." I reply laughing.
"So you'll be busy for the next hour then." I roll my eyes at his statement. It isn't like all my books have to be in alphabetical order by author. Ok maybe they do and my collecting isn't the smallest but it helps me fill my time.
"Stop being mean. I can't help it if I have a lot of books. Anyway, what do you want? You only call when you want something from me."
"Yeah right, go out and make friends rather than read. Also, I found your folder of planning from last year's teaching and thought you might want it so I was calling to let you know that I have posted it to you."
"You couldn't have just texted me that? You are a strange brother sometimes. Thank you though." I say rolling my eyes at him again.
"No problem. I got to go now as dinner is ready. Make sure you call me soon Dy. Love you."
"Love you too bro. bye," I say hanging up before turning back to my books.
An hour later and I'm finally fully packed so I order some food. Once I've eaten I head to bed and read until I fall asleep.
