Attempting to decode the names in DN

Alright guys, I dunno about you but the names of these damn characters had always been interesting to me. Like who the fuck names their child the letter L? As much as I love you L what the fuck is your name? It's kinda cool but at the same time,,, what?

And the fact Mail (Matt) is pronounced as Mile is weird to me.

So I decided to look into the characters names. And ask around for where they may have come from.

So let's start with our baby L.

Ignoring the fact his first name is straight up just L, lets look at Lawliet. Not to be dramatic or anything but Lawliet is like the prettiest name I've ever heard. Both my parents said it sounds like it's a French name, and I always thought it sounded like it came from somewhere in Europe so I guess I got that right. It would make sense since L does canonly have some French in him. It would be interesting if he has one Japanese parent, one French parent and was born and raised in England. If that's the case then his father would have been the French one if L took that last name because through marriage the mothers presumably Japanese last name would have been changed to Lawliet. That's if it actually is French. But from what I've seen most people point it to French.

I've already talked about the whole pronunciation thing in another chapter ages ago. Long story short, yes the Japanese symbols for his name do directly translate to lowlight (rōaraito) but the western pronunciation is Law-Lee-Et. It's one of those names that depend on where in the world you are on how to pronounce it. But I'd I'm right and it is a French name, then Law-Lee-Et would be right along with Low-Light for the Japanese. Also I used google translate to see what Lawliet would sound like in French and its highkey very fancy sounding and definitely fits.

Now onto Matt. When I asked around on where Mail would have come from I was told that it's most likely Irish. Now when I looked up Jeevas, it said it was Russian. Honestly I've never really thought about Matt possibly having some Irish in him but the more I think about it the more it kind of fits??? But I never would have guess Jeevas was Russian.

Ok now for Mello. Mihael Keehl. This is an odd one. There's a theory that Mello has some Russian in him which I could totally see. The last name keehl came up as most common in the US and Russia. So he could have genes from either of those places. When I looked up and asked around for Mihael, I got the origins of both Hebrew and Slavic?? I'm lost with mello. I think he must have some Russian in him but idk about anything else he could be mixed with. But I found a meaning for his name and it apparently means 'who is like god'.

Ok Near isn't that odd. Nate River sounds pretty normal but I looked it up anyway just to see where the name was common and where he could he from. Nate was derived from the name Nathaniel, which means gift of god. It came up as Hebrew origin and is popular in Europe apparently. River is a common surname form the US and most commonly found in the Marshall Islands. So I'm just gonna assume Near comes from somewhere in Europe, maybe has an American parent. Yo imagine if Nears name was actually Nathaniel and Nate was just a nickname. I know it's not bc Nate shows up on the Shinigami eyes but imagine-

I'm not even gonna question Light and Misa bc they're both Japanese and we know this for sure.

I couldn't fine meanings for the names Mail or Lawliet, but I do know on the death note wiki there's something about the L standing for 'last one' and 'lost one' which is poetic. And kind of dark when you think about the fact he's an orphan.

Last thing I'll add here doesn't actually have to do with names. But while I was looking at the wiki on L for any information I came across something...
