I am a Miami girl.

I've heard gunshots from a mile away.

Though no one payed any

Heed to them

Because they were so frequent.

I've seen fights happen

Almost everyday at my school.

Getting called to the office to

play witness wasn't rare.

Something that was rare was teachers

That helped you when you

Needed it.

Spanish was the new English

Where I lived.

If you couldn't order your

Breakfast, lunch or dinner

at a restaurant

in Spanish,

You must've not been hungry,

In other words, you must've liked starving yourself.

I was forced to be tough.

If you weren't tough where I lived, you wouldn't have survived.

If you want to be in my future,

You must get to know my past.
