“Life is about trusting our feelings, taking chances, finding happiness, appreciating the memories and learning from the past.”

When I was young, I would lay down on the roof top and look up at the stars. I’d try counting them but ending up counting the same ones twice. My mum told me that if I kept wishing on the northern star my wish will come true.

~Flashback~

“Hey Niall, You see that star right there.”

“Yeah, mum.”

I whispered tiredly. She dragged me out of our house at 12 a.m. and everyone else was asleep. I didn’t mind much, it was peaceful outside. The warm, summer night air felt good against your skin. You could hear the insects chirping a some random fireflies that will appear, surprisingly, right in front of you.

“That star right there is the northern star.”

“So...”

“Sooo...” My mum mimicked me in a high pitchy voice.

“That star is a wishing star. You can make any wish and it’ll come true.”

“Sure...”

“You don’t believe me...Try it.”

I laid there thinking about what I wanted. I don’t really want anything, but...

I closed my eyes, scrunching my nose to give the extra effect. I could hear my mother laughing in the background.

“Done!” I yelled.

“What did you wish for?”

“If I tell you, it won’t come true.”

“It might.”

“We’ll have to see in the morning.”

“I guess we will.” My mum sighed.

We both laid on the ground staring up at the sky.

“Mum..”

“Yes, love.”

“Is it ok to wish for two things.”

“I don’t see why not.”

“Cool.”

“Are you going to tell me this one or do I have to wait until morning?”

I wiggled closer to my mum, so I was snuggled into her side. She rapped her arms around me like a teddy bear you get for your birthday, that’s bigger than you are. You can barely drag it up stairs to you room, but once you have it with you, tucked in bed with you under the covers, you can’t help but feel safe.

“I wished for this moment to last forever.”

I said, drifting of to sleep tucked safely into my mums arms.

“I think I can make that happen. Memories can last forever if you wish.”

My mother said, holding me tighter and kissing me of the forehead. Both of us falling asleep in the mid-summer air.

 ~Flashback (End)~

Us humans, always want things to last forever, and in reality it’s only the memories we hold that makes a moment last forever...
