“So I was thinking Thursday for our date?”

I stare at Josh, trying to figure him out.  We are sitting at the lunch table on Monday afternoon.  We’re discussing our movie outing this week as we wait for Peter and Chelsea to get their lunches from the lunch line.  “First of all, it’s not a date.  It’s me letting you take me somewhere, so you can feel better about letting me fall off a cliff.  Secondly, why Thursday?  Why not Friday?”

Josh takes a bite of his sandwich before answering, “Thursday is $2 popcorn and drinks day.”

“Stingy,” I mutter.  “Whatever, when are we going on Thursday?”

“I was thinking you could come over to my house around 3ish, so we can get to the Tuckahoe in time to see a 4:30 showing.”

                “Why so early?!”  I shriek.

“Matinee prices, duh.”  He says the words slowly like he’s talking to a five year old.  “Look, I’d explain it all to you, but I’m fresh out of crayons.  Sorry.”

                “You’re such a child, Josh.”

“That’s why you love me,” he wiggles his eyebrows in what I assume is an attempt to be sexy.

“I most definitely do not love you.”

Josh smirks as if he’s about to do something he knows will make me mad.  “Oh, Jenna!”  He yells loud enough for everyone within a twenty-foot radius to hear.  “You know you adore me!  Your life would be an endless black hole if it weren’t for me!”

“I’m going to kill you,” I growl.

“Aww,” he coos.  “Your struggle to hide your deep affection does wonders for my ego!”

I look around in embarrassment.  A lot of people are smiling at us, and my cheeks flush.  “Would you just quit it already?”

“If you agree to my terms.”

“I hardly see how they’re ‘terms-’”

                “OH JENNA!”

                “Fine!  I agree!  I agree!”

                “Agree to what?”

“Oh, hey, Chelsea.  I agreed to go on a date with him Thursday even though I have a project due.”  The lie slides smoothly off my tongue, which is good.  Chelsea buys it, but Peter gives me a look at he takes his place at the table.

“Aww!  That’s so sweet!  Where are you guys going?”

“To a movie.  I have to meet him at his house.”

Chelsea looks at Josh with disapproval.

“What?”  He shrugs as if he thinks he’s done nothing wrong.

“She has a brace on her knee, and you’re going to make her hop that hedge?”

“Hey!  A man’s got to get ready, don’t he?”

“Ugh,” she sighs.  “Boys are hopeless.”  Peter’s expression twists into one of hurt at this, so Chelsea quickly compensates herself.  “Oh, not you, sweetie.  You’re a man.”  Peter laughs at that and grabs a piece of grilled chicken off Chelsea’s tray.  I notice all her food is either a fruit, vegetable, or the grilled chicken.  She usually goes for the more fatty and savory options like hamburgers and pizza.

I wonder if she’s changed her diet because of the diagnosis?
