“And this is DM,” I said, placing my fingers on the strings and strumming softly. I was teaching Hayley a few chords. She was a really fast learner. Each time she got a chord correctly, her whole face lit up. It was so cute. Every time she did my stomach turned. But it was a good turn.

I helped place her delicate fingers on her strings. Her nails got in the way sometimes, but she always found a way to make it work. “Okay,” I said. “Now try that.”

She played the chord perfectly. “You did great!” I said enthusiastically. “Try it again!”

Hayley was glowing, smiling brightly as she did it again and again. “It’s getting better each time!” I exclaimed. She looked so happy, seeing herself doing it. “You’re really fast at learning all of this. Now do you remember C7?”

Hayley nodded her head, and quickly placed her fingers on the strings and strummed. “This is really fun,” she giggled. I played the chord with her, and we both laughed.

“It’s more fun having someone to finally play with,” I sighed. “I really like doing this with you.”

Hayley stopped, and placed her guitar to the side. “Start playing your song again.”

I rolled my eyes. “Before I do, we need to title this song. And I know what to call it.”

She looked at me curiously. “You do? what?”

                “The only exception.”

Hayley stopped talking, and had a small smile on her lips. I began playing, and she began singing again. Her voice was enchanting.

When I was younger I saw my daddy cry

And curse at the wind

He broke his own heart and I watched

As he tried to reassemble it

And my momma swore

That she would never let herself forget

And that was the day that I promised

I'd never sing of love if it does not exist

I played along, not looking at my strings to make sure I was doing it right. When I looked into Hayley’s eyes, I could do it all at the back of my head.

But darling,

You are the only exception

You are the only exception

You are the only exception

You are the only exception

When we finally ended the song, Hayley looked like she was going to cry. Every time she sang this song, she got so emotional, and I loved that. “You gonna fall asleep on me?” I asked, gently touching her shoulder.

“No,” she said, sitting straighter. “You’re really good at playing.”

                “You’re really good at singing.”

It was silent for a minute.

“You know what?” I asked, sitting back in the sofa.

                “What?”

                “This could be our song.”

Hayley looked up at me, and I felt my heart pounding again. “It already is our song.”

I wanted to kiss her so badly. Everything was perfect. I know she wanted to as well. I saw her shaking, her hands grabbing onto the couch for support. If I could just lean in…

“I forgot to tell you why I wrote about a love song.”

My thoughts stopped. All of my attention went to her instantly.

“There’s a reason why I wrote it. There is someone behind it all.”

My heart began beating even more, but then it stopped dead. What if it wasn’t me? It could, but it couldn’t be. She could be dating someone right now and didn’t have the guts to tell me yet. Or she already had dated someone. My thoughts stopped.

“Taylor,” Hayley said softly. I looked up. She was staring at me seriously. She put a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry. I can see when you worry like this.”

I could barely breathe. I didn’t know what to expect now. I looked down at the ground. Only if…

                “Taylor, it’s you.”

I looked up, seeing Hayley blushing red, but dead serious. I knew she was telling the truth right then. And I knew that I had to kiss her now. But Hayley beat me to it.

She put a hand on my cheek, and she began to kiss me. I kissed back, putting my hands on her back, pulling her in. She wrapped her arms around me, holding me tight as we kept kissing. We pulled away after a bit, looking at each other in surprise.

“I really like you Taylor,” Hayley finally spoke. “I have ever since you walked into the classroom that morning. I knew something was going to happen.” She trailed off. “But I was so afraid that you never wanted the same.”

“I felt the same way. It’s hard to not tell somebody you love then when you’re not sure if they love you back,” I blurted out. I had to tell her. I wanted to for so long now.

                “I love you.”

“And I love you too.” I kissed her again. God, it felt amazing to kiss her finally. I wanted to for so long. To finally see how she felt about me, how she really felt. It felt amazing to be loved.
