*Esther Smith POV*
I was walking to the Sanatorium with my parents, nothing unusual seemed to happen while we were there, so I'd assume that the coast is clear. My parents walked me into the facility and proceeded to sign some papers.
I looked around while standing still next to my parents. Nobody was in sight, just some decently decorated walls and some wheelchairs in sight. I could hear the noises of children in the distance, but I'm not sure were the noises were actually coming from. My parents finished signing the papers and proceeded to wave good bye at me and leave. The lady at the front desk, with her neat white colored uniform got up from where she was sitting, and held me by the hand. She started to walk me to where I believe is my new room for the next couple of weeks.
After a minute of walking through the halls, the lady finally stopped at my room.
"This will be your room for the time being. I hope you find this place comfortable. You'll be staying here for a while. Anyways, try to remember the number of your room. I'll have to lead you to the cafeteria now. The others are eating right now, and I shouldn't be letting you starve in your room." the lady said.
I nodded and look at the number next to my door, "#38" I said in my head. That's a pretty easy number to remember. I then looked towards the lady. She held my hand again and began to lead me to the Cafeteria. As we walked down the halls to the Cafeteria, the noises of other children talks and moving around came closer. I looked calm and collected on the outside, but in the inside, I was bursting with joy. I never really see other children. I was mostly taught at home, since my parents feared that putting me into a school would mean they would get insults, or dirty looks due to my mental and physical health.
A slight smile crept on my face. We reached the Cafeteria. The noise was even louder. The lady let go of my hand and then opened the door for me to enter. The lady began to walk back to what I assume is the front desk. I walked inside of the Cafeteria. There was so many children there. Children my age, some possibly older than me, and some possibly younger than me. I tried to hide my smile, as not to creep out anybody there. I've never seen so many people gathered in one room before. I've always read books about people playing with their friends, eating lunch together, having a gay time together. I'm so glad I got to experience what I've read in my books for the first time.
My joy slightly washed away as I thought to myself, "wait,I've never been in a Cafeteria before, how does this whole thing work??" I began to worry, so many kids had plates of food in their hands, talking to their friends and acting jolly. How do I get food I thought? Then I saw people waiting in a line to get something. Maybe I need to wait in that line too? I began to walk towards the line.
As I got closer to the line, I saw a girl with blonde hair and a green head band. I couldn't see the front of her face though. She wore a blue checkered pattern skirt and a with a white shirt. I was standing behind her in the line. I've never really seen anybody with light colored hair, so I was pretty amazed.
Me, being the dumb person I was, I touched her hair. It was surprisingly smooth. The girl quickly turned towards me, looking confused and a little scared.
"Who are you and why did you touch my hair??" she said.
"Oh! um...I sincerely apologize for doing that..It's just, I've never seen somebody with hair like yours before and well, I was pretty tempted to touch it..your hair is very beautiful.." I responded nervously
"Ugh....Thank you I suppose?..I've never seen somebody like you either.. Usually dark haired people have dark eyes to match, but you have light blue eyes?"
"Thank you.....SO ugh, what's your name?"
"My name's Annie, Annie Elastor."
"Oh, that's a wonderful name! My name's Esther Smith."
"Thanks, you have a nice name too."
Our conversation was suddenly interrupted with a loud "NEXT", Annie then started to walk to what I assume is the Cafeteria lady and proceeded to point to the foods she wanted, then the Cafeteria lady gave her the food she selected. She then walked away into the crowd of people.
I frowned a bit, already missing her company, but hey, that was the first friend that I have ever made. I'm very proud of myself for starting a conversation with somebody else my age, but I wish it didn't have such an awkward beginning. I then walked to the Cafeteria lady and chose the foods that I wanted. She put them on my plate and I then tried to follow where Annie went, she's the only person I know so far.
