The Boy

He was the only boy that I ever caught staring at me, I'd get all nervous and say "why are you staring at me", he'd grin and say "oh nothing" and then look away. He was the only one to text me a few minutes after I'd seen him, asking me if I got home safe. The only one who could get close enough to tease me, but I'd push away. The only one who would try to always fit in my life, one way or another. But something changed in him. The last time I saw that boy, he smiled at me, I smiled back and then looked away. The next time I looked back, he was no longer there. His eyes no longer lingered on me. My phone no longer held messages from him. He walked right by me and failed to acknowledge me. It was in those moments that I realized he was no longer that boy. I wanted to see that boy again, talk to that boy again but it was no use, he wasn't coming back, he was gone for good. But, then again, I've seen that smile, the boy had a smile, a smile that held the same force of gravity. He smiled at me, it was quick but in that smile and in those seconds I thought I saw the boy I once knew.
