Fake News

Posey couldn't explain what was happening. One minute she was standing staring into the dark eyes of a man who claimed she was in the underworld and then the next second she was looking up at a street lamp in the middle of 14th street.

She dried to sit up since the hot asphalt beneath her was uncomfortable and hard but she couldn't move her body. Somewhere in the distance she heard Zoe's voice crying out for her. Posey tried to turn her head and look for her dear friend, but the task was impossible. She felt a hard pressure on her chest. It felt as if an elephant was sitting on her.

Other than her eyes, she couldn't move anything else. Something warm and wet soaked the back of her neck. She prayed to the heavenly gods it wasn't some homeless man's pee.

"We have a pulse," a man yelled out.

Suddenly, Posey felt her body be lifted and then moved onto some kind of cold smooth material. As her body moved, Posey got a glimpse of the paramedics.

Desperately, Posey tried to ask them what was happening, but of course, she couldn't talk. It was frustrating. Posey felt as if she was stuck in a nightmare.

The paramedics moved Posey into the ambulance. She heard the voice of Zoe cry out for her again.

"She....she....she was crossing the street," Zoe cried.

There was a pause.

"No, no, I don't know," Zoe cried again. "Oh gosh there is so much blood."

Another pause.

"Which hospital are we going to?" Zoe asked.

"Lenox Hill," someone answered.

"Lenox Hill," Zoe repeated. "Please, hurry. I'm with her."

Posey suddenly felt cold. Was it the air conditioning in the ambulance, she wandered. But that couldn't be it. As she stared at the ceiling of the ambulance, her toes and fingers felt numb.

"She's flatlining again!" Someone shouted. There was a rush of movements and Zoe's cry.

Posey wanted to tell her to calm down, but of course she couldn't do anything. Her ears picked up the beeping of a hundred different machines. Her eyes began to close and she started to panic.

Was she really flatlining?

By some miracle, she was able to blink. Her eyelids closed for half a second. When she opened them back up, she was by the weeping willow again.

Tobias and Charon had their backs turned towards Posey when she appeared. As she sat on the ground looking around, her eyes landed on them.

"Hey!" She called out to them.

The men turned in surprise.

"She's still not on the list, Tobias," Charon whispered.

"Then why the hell is she back?" Tobias said irritated as he marched over to Posey.

"What happened?" He asked once she reached her.

Posey held out her hand towards Tobias as she squinted in the bright sunlight. Tobias grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet.

"I don't know!" Posey waved her arms around. "What is happening? They said I was flatlining again....what does again mean. Why do I keep coming back here? Am I really dying? Oh god, oh god, oh god .... What should I do? Am I going to hell? I swear I only stole library books once and it was only because there was a fine on my card and I really wanted the books. Am I going to hell for stealing? And even if I don't go to hell, where would I go? Dang, that accident must have been bad if I flatlined twice! Ah man ...."
