This year is my fifth year at Hogwarts and also the first year of none other than Albus Potter. His older brother James entered Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry two years ago and honestly, it was a shit show. The first Potter child to surface into the wizarding world since, well, Harry Potter of course. I kinda felt bad for the kid, I mean yeah, his dad survived Voldemort's killing curse as a baby and then grew up only to kill Voldemort later on, saving the entirety of the wizarding world; but do you see the key parts here? It wasn't James who did all that amazing stuff, it was his dad, and here he is, James Potter, coming to Hogwarts for his third year. At least he has Louis Weasley to hang around with otherwise I think he probably would have thrown himself off the quidditch stands or something by now.
Can you even imagine being the first Potter to enrol at Hogwarts after 17 years? No, you can't; you can't imagine how awful it would be to live in your dad's shadow constantly. When he was sorted into Gryffindor, James was bombarded with people; everyone wanted to take him under their wing, become his friend, and hopefully get a glimpse of the ever so famous Harry Potter. I honestly couldn't care less.
Yes, you heard it here first folks, Lillian Winterton, a proud Gryffindor, wanted nothing to do with the son of Harry Potter, the mighty Gryffindor who saved us all. Most Gryffindors like to boast about how they're in the same house as Harry Potter once was, the same house that James Potter is, and the same house that all the Potter children- hopefully -will be.
I kind of hope that Albus Potter is sorted into another house for two reasons: one, so that maybe he won't have to go through the trauma that his older brother most likely went through during his first year, and two, so that I'll have something else to listen to when all the Gryffindors talk. You know, instead of the same old "Have you seen James today?" "Do you think James Potter likes me?" Or the classic "Do you think he'll introduce me to his dad?" A girl's gotta have some good background gossip to listen to when she's doing her History of Magic homework am I right?
It's Rose Weasley's first year too. Although I disagree with all the hubbub surrounding the Potter children I honestly feel bad for the Weasley kids. Ronald Weasley was just as much a part of the story as Harry Potter was and yet his nieces and nephews continue to pour into Hogwarts without any fuss whatsoever. This will be the first year one of his own children attend Hogwarts and I think there is plenty of room for celebration if you're into that sort of thing. The oldest Weasley children, Victoire, Fred, and Molly are starting their last year here at Hogwarts and then they're finally free. Lucy, Roxanne, and Dominique Weasley are all in my year, two of which (Lucy and Roxanne) are in Gryffindor. Dominique was sorted into Ravenclaw and I remember how crushed she looked when she had to be separated from her cousins.
Mary Waldgrave, my most cherished friend, hangs out with Dominique during classes and says she still hasn't gotten over the separation. Mary would know, her most fascinating skill is reading peoples emotions and noticing small details. I'm convinced it's what got her into Ravenclaw but she disagrees.
Mary and I met during potions in our first year. Our professor, Professor Hraj, made us pair up with someone from the opposite house and Mary and I were the last two without partners. We absolutely bombed the potions lab and got into huge trouble because we accidentally made this kid named Ben's teeth fall out. We've been friends ever since, and it turns out that Mary's boyfriend, Louis Kinsley's, best friend is none other than said Ben Pendleton. He got his teeth back but he hasn't let us live it down. Sometimes I think about what his reaction was when Louis told him he was dating the girl who made him lose his teeth. It makes me laugh when I'm feeling gloomy.
"You're staring off into space again Lil, what's going on?" Mary waved a hand in front of my face snapping me out of my daze. We were all sat in the bustling dining hall waiting for the new first years to enter through the giant doors at the back of the hall.
