My idea for this is that right before Dustale Sans completely dusted Papyrus he made one more promise.
The way it goes is that Papyrus asks him to not let all his previous acts completly change him. To not forget who he truly is.
What happens next is the original ending of Sans finishing off Chara.
From then on Sans journeys across the Underground and considering Papyrus's words. When Sans reaches the judgement hall he comes to a decision.
He releases the six human souls and lets them be free and pass on.
He turns and leaves, slowly but surely he lets go, little by little small particles leave him as numerous memories of past events and timelines pass through him.
He's almost completly dissapated when he utters
" Welp I'm going to Grillby's,.... do any of you want anything?"
