"Aelin!" I heard my mum shouting upstairs and looked up from the book I was reading. In my head I still debated whether it was worth getting up or not when she shouted again sounding a little upset. I heaved myself from the couch and trotted upstairs where my mum was busy rearranging the furniture. After getting a divorce my dad decided it would be best for all of us to move out and look for a new home somewhere in Arizona. He said he was tired of the changing temperatures here in Georgia and that I could always come visit. I didn't think he was aware of the mess he left behind. Even though we tried to decorate the house differently and move the furniture around his absence was still hovering over us like a giant hole. "Are you going to help me now or do you want to keep on staring at the wall like that?" Her brown hair was put up into a messy bun and her brown eyes were sparkling with amusement. "I want to be finished before your school starts again and I have to go back to work" she said so I helped her move the heavy wardrobe to the others side of the room. She was right. In less than two and a half days I would be back sitting in the doomed little building they called school. Nothing ever happened there. Just like the small town we were living in the local high school was tiny and had only about 220 students. We didn't even have a football team.
And the worst thing: my best friend Liv got a boyfriend a few weeks before summer break wich meant that I had to spend almost the whole vacation on my own to avoid being the third wheel. I didn't assume that it would get any better as soon as school started.
Eventually we finished rearranging the house and eating dinner. Later when I went to bed I thought about all the things that happened this summer. Since my dad moved out my mum hadn't been herself . We went on a trip to California to recover a little bit and even though she pretended that everything was fine I could still hear her crying at night. A few times I also went to see my best friend Liv but it was hard to catch her without her boyfriend Chris. I'm not saying I didn't like him it was just that his presence made me feel incredibly lonely. He and Liv were so happy together that it somehow made me sad. Since my other friend Mike had been in Europe the last three months I spent a lot of time home alone. My mum was a nurse who had to work at nights wich meant that she was sleeping through the day and we didn't see each other very often.
That night I dreamt some crazy stuff about myself caught in a cage and drowning in a weird smelling liquid.
The next morning I had breakfast with my mum before we went to the mall to buy some stuff for school and a few new clothes. It was an ironically sunny day and the last one I could spend with my mum for the next two weeks.
In the evening we watched a movie at home and ate popcorn.
The next day came and went by way faster than I would have liked. Only the thought of going back to school made me sick.
