I walk into the front door of my home. The smell of cold food fills the air. Sticking my head into the kitchen, I see Celia completely asleep at the table. Outside of the window behind her, the tree leaves dance in the wind. I draw out a deep sigh as I plop my backpack lazily at the doorframe of my room not far away from my sleeping older sister. I slouch in the chair of my desk which my decent laptop sits on. Its USB outlets filled to power my mouse, keyboard and to attach the storage device that rests next to it, the HDMI outlet connected to the monitor that rests in sleep mode until I fiddle with the keys of my typing contraption.

The blue light of the screen flashes on for a second before turning to a more orange-ish tone (my eyes are very thankful for night light mode) and displaying my desktop. On top of my (favorite game) background sits a few games I downloaded from Steam, my browser, the anti-virus software I bought a while ago and, finally, the Digi-Connect app. Clicking twice on it, a white box appears before some text in blocks appears inside it. 'Connecting to servers.' Soon the program shows a screen with many options on it. Before I can even check my current Digimon's status, a box appears, 'Scrinchxxx challenges you to a battle. Accept?' I smile and click to accept the challenge.

An open field appears on the screen and the application opens to full-screen mode. Scrinch's avatar points and his Kabuterimon crash lands on the field with a harrowing screech. My avatar points and out of a whirling of leaves my Renamon appears, gracefully making a fighting stance. Text in a black box with red, bold text appears, 'AI battle imminent! Prepare for Digi-Duel!' I take in a deep breath as the two digital creatures run at each other. Renamon leaps into the air and attacks with an aerial kick. The bug monster uses its giant metal horn to block it, smacking away the much smaller vulpine creature. Renamon crashes into a tree as I check the cooldowns on my abilities.

Kabuterimon rears its head and charges at Renamon, but she is able to leap out of the way and causes it to smash down the vegetation. With a quick click of my mouse, the arena darkens and shining leaves surround my monster. Renamon yells, "Diamond Storm!" The glowing leaves suddenly speed toward the overgrown beetle and cut him in many different places.

The lighting of the area goes back to normal as the Kabuterimon turns around. The arena darkens again as it uses an ability too, "Mega Blaster!" It's many arms cross and a ball of light appears. It opens up those arms and a large laser of energy careens toward Renamon. But thanks to my Digimon's exceptional speed, it dodges just in time.

In a second, Renamon runs over to the large bug. Its arms and legs imbue with energy, "Power Paw!" In quick succession, Renamon punches and kicks Kabuterimon multiple times making it even more damaged. Then my monster yells again, "Spin Kick!" Renamon roundhouses Kabuterimon multiple times. But I'm not done yet, as I activate my last ready skill, "Rapid Kick!" The vulpine creature high kicks the insectoid several times before it gets sent flying back. In big bold letters, two letters appear on the screen, 'KO!' Renamon gets into a victory pose with my avatar holding out a thumbs-up, then it cuts to Scrinch's avatar sad and their Digimon lying on the ground in defeat.

As, 'You Win,'  appears on the screen I look at Renamon. It makes me wish I could actually interact with her. I shake off my fantasy as I go back to the application's main menu. 'Renamon isn't real and the digital world Digimon live isn't real either,' I think in an attempt to convince myself. The ring of my doorbell alerts me to a presence at my door. As I get up from my chair, I can swear that Renamon connects eyes with me. Opening the door, I don't find any humans but instead a box. I bring it back to my room and open it up on my bed.

A small, ornate device sits inside it. It has a few buttons and a small screen. I press the smallest red button hesitantly and I feel instant regret. Data. So many numbers. All of it fills my eyes. I feel my body start to disintegrate and for a few seconds, I am nothing. Then I am thrown back together in a forest of some sort. I feel off, almost fake.  The device from the box is still in my hands. On its screen text says, 'Locating partner..."

A guttural warcry causes me to turn around. An angry Fugamon waves around its large club. I take a few steps back and he starts running at me. 'Crap, crap, crap!' With a savage cry, it swings the club at me. I barely dodge. I end up on the ground. The evil Digimon swings again before I can get up. I feel the spikes on the giant bone pierce my flesh and the club itself bruises my back. The creature yells again before starting to beat me relentlessly. I feel the copper taste of blood pool in my mouth. 'This is not how I imagined my life going today,' I think. Suddenly, the strange device in my hand glows and I hear a familiar voice.

"Diamond Storm!" Glowing leaves cut across and into the Fugamon. The creature looks scared and then runs. I look at my savior and see... Renamon? Immediately I can tell that Renamon is female from her body form. She looks back at me and walks over, "Master, are you okay?" I weakly reach for her and she grabs my hand. Without another word, I am lifted up from the ground and Renamon starts to carry me away. My head involuntarily rests against the fluffy, soft fur on her chest and I feel myself drift to sleep.

A hut's roof greets my eyes. As I lift my head up from the comfortable but crude pillow I rested on, I quickly drop my head back from the singing pain in my back. I feel something wrapped around my torso and, looking at my arm, bloody bandages cling to my limb. I suck in air sharply still riving in pain. Renamon's soothing voice coos from my side, "Master..." Her voice is filled with pity. I turn my head towards her.

"Please, call me (Name)," I say with a smile despite my pain.

"New tamer name registered: (Name)." Renamon helps me sit up, her soft paws rest on my shoulders. I watch as one of her hands drifts down and stops near my hurt arm. Then Renamon's hand clamps down on my injury yet it doesn't hurt. A faint green aura appears and I feel the arm hurt much less.

Then it occurs to me that I have zero idea where I am, "Renamon, where am I? Why are you real?" The digital fox then moves onto the bed to get behind me.

Her hands touch my back to heal me again, "You are in the digital world, mas- I mean, (Name)." Her cheeks get a little red when she slips up my name. "And for your information, I was always real." I don't say anything in response. What could I say? Renamon finishes healing me and snatches the device in my pocket. She informs me it's called a Digi-Vice and the way I get out is the way I got in.

Taking the hint that I should leave. I stand up and hold my thumb over the button. But before I hit it, I hug Renamon and leave before I can see her reaction. My adjust to dim light of my room in the evening. I put down the Digi-Vice on my desk and curl up in ball on my bed, "What the hell did I just see?"
