How did it come to this? I've lived here my whole life and nothing like this has ever happened. How? Many start from the beginning, but this is my end. My mother always told me if I lied I would burn in the pits of hell. I didn't believe her, I just thought it was foolery. Yet, here I am. This is my hell, this is where I burn.
The year was 1984 in Micanopy, Florida. The population is around 247, quite big for this small town. I've lived here my whole life and nothing interesting has happened...not until he came to town. There was word that a mysterious man had built a cabin for himself down in the woods. Only a few had seen him, but from what they have said, he is extremely attractive.
After hearing much about this mysterious man, I decided to go pay him a visit myself. In order to show friendliness, I decided to buy him a pie. I'm not much of a baker, so I'd rather buy a pie than poison him. Once I arrived at his house, I knocked a few times before hearing the silence of nature. I turned to get back to my car when I saw a brunette, thin, cacuasion male standing in front of the deck. I gave a small scream, dropping the pie.
"Oh my goodness! I am so sorry. I didn't mean to startle you.", the man runs up to me. "I'm Louis. Wonderful to meet you.". Louis puts a hand out for me to shake. I stare at the red-stained hand. He gasps and chuckles nervously, "You must forgive me. I make my own jams and I was crushing up the strawberries by hand. That's why I'm out here and not in there. Speaking of which," he steps around me and the fallen pie to get to the door ", please come inside.".
We walked inside as he has me sit on the couch. "You're the first from town to visit me. I appreciate that... I never caught your name.", he hands me a cup of water.
"I'm David. Sorry I dropped the pie. I probably made a mess.". I take a sip of my water while examining the cozy cabin. The kitchen and dining room were quite visible from where I was sitting, but the rest of the house hidden. "You have a beautiful home.". Louis gives me a soft smile before taking a seat on the couch across me.
"Thank you, my ex-wife would've disapproved.". Without thinking, I cock my head to the side and ask, "Ex-wife? Newly divorced?" he nods in response. Growing more intrigued I asked what happened. It doesn't make sense. Growing more intrigued I asked what happened. It doesn't make sense. An attractive man like him should be married and loved. "Well...she didn't approve of my lifestyle.". Before I could stop myself, my lips move without my command, "And that was?". He gives a small smirk before laughing, "Well isn't someone curious?". My cheeks go scarlet red and apologize for my rudeness.
After a few hours of charting, I get up to go home. "I must be going now, it's getting late.". My new friend stands and walks me outside. I chuckle at the upside down pie. "Sorry about the pie again. You must let me make it up to you.", he gives a soft smile. "I heard about this amazing bakery in town. How about that?" I nod. "This Saturday good." he smiles in response. "Farewell new friend. Till Saturday."
Is now Saturday and I'm on my way to pick up Louis for our bakery hang out. I hadn't seen him since Monday, but we've called each other every single day he's very nice, but so mysterious. Something dark about him just draws me to him. I could see him being that serial killer in a horror movie that all the girls swoon over. He's quite edgy if I do say so myself.
Finally arriving to Casey's bakery, we both ordered a slice of carrot cake. "So... how do you like it so far?" he takes a sip of the black coffee had gotten. "The town? It's so quiet and everyone is nice. Much better than Arizona.". The town is filled with nice people, but too many people. "Yeah. It's nice, but getting too crowded in my opinion . The traffic is the worst at the moment. If I could have everyone disappear just be me with the selection of people, i'd be so happy.".
He gives a small laugh. "When I was younger I had hamsters. One of them ended up giving both to 24 babies. I didn't have enough food to feed them so... I drowned them. I felt bad, but it's better to drown than to starve for days." Though he had a point, he sounded like a psycho.
I change the topic wants her cake arrived. For nearly 2 hours we talked about a variety of subjects. After a while, I drop them off at home and made plans to come over on Monday.
As the months pass, Louis and I grew very close. If I'm going to the store and saw me they could assume Louis was nearby. Our friendship had become an odd one. It was as if we were married. He would buy me random gifts, saying he thought of me when he saw it. I would take him out to town for an enjoyable night together. At this point, I'd say we are best friends.
However, something weird has been happening around town. People had started to go missing without a trace. I told Louis about it and he said he would protect me at all costs, which I think is very sweet of him.
I'm currently at his house because we are fixing my car. It was having some issues staying running, so Louis had me bring it over. "Could you hand me the towel?", I hand him the towel and he begins patting up car grease around my engine. We've been out here for about two hours now. I was beginning to get hungry. Just as I was about to say something, my stomach growled rather loudly. Louis laughed at me and said, "Ready for lunch? How about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? If you could go inside and get out the stuff while I'll wrap up what I'm doing, that'd be great.". I then head inside and get out the simple ingredients.
After searching multiple cabinets, I couldn't find the jelly. I decided it may have been placed in the pantry, so I go around the corner of the kitchen and open the door to my left. I see a flight of stairs leading down to the dark abyss. Growing curious, I decide to go down.
We usually go to my house to hang since I have better cable connection, so I'm not too familiar with his house. However, he never mentioned the basement.
I search for a light on the walls in my right. As my hand search for lights were taken of the cold stone walls, I feel myself starting something wet. I finally from switching turned it on. I did not prepare myself for what I saw before me. I quickly turned off the light and returned upstairs. I close the door behind me and open the door across from the basement.
This explains so much, but why? Should I call the police? Should I pretend I saw nothing? I had all the evidence laid in front of me, but what would he do if they found him not guilty?
As my mind races, I pull a string hanging above my hand to find myself in a well-lit pantry. I quickly grab a jar of jam only to turn to see Louis. He smiles at me and I drop the jar frightened.
"I am so sorry. I didn't except to see you in here.". He laughs as he pulls me out the pantry gently by the arm. I step in the red jam, leaving sticky footprints behind. "Don't worry about it. While you were looking for jam, I finished lunch.". I give a fake laugh.
So now he knows I went into the basement ...what if he tries to kill me too.
He hands me my plate and leads me outside. "Are you okay? You seem like you just saw a dead body." He laughs as he begins to eat. I laugh along not wanting to set an alarm off, "Just got scared back there by you. That's all.". Mother always said lying was a sin, but I'm lying to save myself....
After we ate lunch we got back to fixing me car. Throughout the process, he had accidentally spilled gasoline on me, but it was no problem. It had started to get dark by the time we figured out what was wrong. He told me to come back tomorrow and we could continue from there. His car had been dead for awhile so he gave me some money to catch a bus at the bus stop 2 miles down the street.
We said goodnight and parted our ways. Thus, my walk to hell began. As I was walking, images of the dead girl's corpse kept popping into my head. I loved Louis and feared of losing him, but murder is a crime that cannot go unpunished. At last, I've to the conclusion that I will tell the police what I saw.
I stopped feeling uncomfortable with my sticky shoe and thoughts. I bent down to untie my shoe when I saw a light from behind. I pretty much know everyone in this small town, so why not get a lift to town or the bus stop?
I stand up and stick up my thumb. The car sees me and creeps over slowly. I shield myself from the blinding headlights as the car shines them upon me. The driver rolls down their window and within the car I see Louis.
I stare at him frozen. At this moment I'm not sure what to do. He has tears rolling down his face, his car is working, he's a murder, but he's my best friend. "I did this for you. Too many people you said. Not enough space you said. They're dead because you said. And to think that I loved and cared for you like no other. Only for you to react this way ...after my mother saw I killed my hamsters...she sent me to a psych ward, ya know? I'm sorry for this, but no one can know a single thing.". As one last tear rolls down his cheek, he tosses a lit match and my clothes burst into flames.
He drives away as I scream in pain. My skin burns, my nostrils fill with the smell of smoke, my limbs feel as though they are being torn apart. I am dying. This is it.
