The computer switched on and I put in my password. I looked at the corner of the screen, the clock read 9:17. I figured I should be leaving around 9:30. I logged into the messaging software, hopefully Daniel would be online. The loading screen finished and sure enough, Daniels dot was green. I took no time in asking him if he was still coming, we agreed to meet 3 blocks away from where the group was meeting up.
At 9:22 I had packed my bag which contained all the needed items and supplies. My mother was convinced I was going over to Daniel’s house to help him study. I was required to come back at 12 but no later. Pssh, as if.
The clock read 9:30. It was time to go, this was it. I told my mother i’d be back in a few, my brother not forgetting to make a ridiculous face at me before I shut the door. I walked a few blocks, then a little more… and more… and eventually I made it to the location. Daniel was already there, wearing his black jacket and baggy jeans. I called his name and he glanced up, smiling at me and waved.
“The sun is starting to go down, its almost time.” He said looking up at the sky.
“I know, do you have the stuff?” I replied, gesturing to the backpack by his feet.He nodded and I smiled. We started walking down the street together and he pulled out his phone.
“9:52. We should get there in a few minutes.” He said
“Kay, oh and did you bring any food? I didn’t get anything before I left.”
“Uhh… I might have something,” he said as he pulled his bag off his back and reached into it. “Aha! Here, its a granola bar. I hope you don’t mind oats.”
“Thanks!” I said munching down on the salty oat bar. It was quite good actually.
When we turned the corner, there were a group of people, probably ages 14-19. They all had backpacks and were sitting on the benches in the center of the park. A few waved us over.
As we approached the group, a boy stood up and turned around. He was wearing all black, glasses and was probably 17. Not much older than Daniel and I.
“Hello, we have been waiting for you. Do you have the items?”
We both nodded as we opened our bags and showed them to him. He smiled and took the bags and set them on the table. He cleared his throat gestured us over. On the table were blueprints of an old warehouse.
“Alright team, so this is the warehouse. Inside, there is a object we need to retrieve. Where it is? No clue, thats why we need to split and search.” He said, pointing to the blueprints. “Now, there are 12 of us here today, which means everyone will be split into 3 groups of 4, we will separate at the entrance. The estimated time to get there is about 20 or so minutes on foot, so we will need all of you to be as quick as possible. We will leave at 10:45, for now we will wait here for the last of the group to get ready.” He said, his forest green eyes scanning the group of kids before he walked away from the table and sat down with 2 other older kids.
We separated into the groups of 4 by one of the older kids. By the looks of it, this ‘operation’ was run by the 4 older kids. They were all in one group, but did different things. Isaac, the eldest of the four had split us apart, the second oldest Max had given us the directions and laid out the plan. Now as far as I am able to tell, the other two are named and Jackson and Tobias. The two of them sat with Max at the center table, discussing the plan.
I was placed into a group with a guy named Billy, he was tall and skinny, like everyone else here, he was wearing all black clothing and a hoodie. There was another boy, he was shorter than Billy and was a bit heavy. His face was covered in freckles and he had bright carrot orange hair. He had told me his name was Ollie. But at the corner of the table there was a girl, she looked like me. With brown hair and blue eyes, she was almost the same height as me and she looked only a year or so older than me. I looked over to Daniel who was chatting with his group on the far side of the park.
The girl waved me over with a smile and I walked over to her and sat down on the stone bench.
“Hey there.” She said, looking at me. “I couldn’t help but notice we are the only girls in this group, and the boys seem pretty distracted.”
I glanced over to Billy and Ollie who were wrapped up in a conversation about a game they play. I laughed a bit and then looked back at the girl.
“Yeah, oh right. My name is Ciara. And you are…?”
“Rach. Er… Rachael.”
“Well nice to meet you Rach, Er Rachael. Are you excited?” I replied, before opening my bag and looking at its contents.
“Well… yeah I guess if you want to call it excited” She said, her expression changing. “It seems a bit dangerous though, doesn’t it?”
“I guess, but hey… Dangerous is a new thing for me, and i'm ready for it.” I said, zipping my bag back up. “It’s time to go now.” I said, looking at the groups starting to leave the park as they followed Isaac and the 3 older boys.
She stood up with me and we walked with Ollie and Billy. Our backpacks on and our hoods up, the groups split off into different directions and we walked. The time to live life on the edge was now, and I was not going to miss it.
