requested. sorry this took so long!

. . .

It was supposed to be a simple mission. Get into the Hydra base, destroy a couple computers, and get out. But Hydra was waiting, and an army met you at the foot of the base.

Cold and wet, you were entirely out of your element, being a healer and all. It was your job to heal wounds, such as Natasha's black eye and Tony's broken arm. It certainly wasn't your job to sacrifice yourself for your fiancé Steve, especially because you'd promised the exact opposite.

Steve's hands cupped your face, eyes searching yours in desperation. "Promise me you won't sacrifice your life for mine. Promise me you'll put yourself first, that whatever mission it is will be your sole focus. Please, doll, you have to promise me."

"Stevie, you know I can't promise that-"

"Please, baby. Just please, promise me you'll put yourself first."

You agreed on one condition: "Only if you promise the same."

It was cliché, wasn't it? Getting hit by a sniper to protect Steve. Breaking your promise, knowing how much it meant to him. But what were you supposed to do, let him die and fail at your job? Worse yet, lose the love of your life?

Steve may hate you for this, he may never forgive you... but you didn't care. Life, death, it didn't matter. You had your family - the small band of Avengers that meant everything to you. And you were going to die protecting them. So as you lay in Steve's arms for a final time, you smiled up at him.

"Don't leave me. Don't you dare leave me." Steve was sobbing now. "I-I can't live without you, doll. Please... please, baby, don't leave me."

"I'm sorry, baby. I know I promised to put myself first, but I-" You broke off, coughing up blood. "What kind of healer would I be if someone died on my watch?"

A dry laugh from Steve, but it didn't last as you mustered enough strength to kiss his cheek. "Just... don't ever forget me, okay?"

"No... no, don't say that doll, you're going to be fine. You're gonna be okay, right?" He tried to smile, but it faltered when your hand brushed his cheek for the last time.

"I love you, Stevie."

"No... y/n, no, don't- don't leave me. Don't leave me, doll, I can't- You promised me! Why did you have to break your promise? Doll, no... no, you can't leave me here..."

But it was too late. You were gone. Steve clung to your body, breathing in your perfume, the scent of your hair.

It took everything in Bucky to finally pull him away.
