"Skye, you coming?" Steve asked. His blue eyes following her around the room. Taking that stance, with crossed arms and the hip out. The stance she hated, and he knew that.
"Yeah two seconds," Skye replied, glancing at him, seeing the stance, and sighed deeply. She knew he felt like he had to protect her, but she could protect herself.
It was her first real mission since she joined the team. She's amazing at combat, but her focus is elsewhere. She has been trained by the black widow herself, Natasha Romanoff. Skye was always a little challenging, because of her lack of focus. She gives up on herself to easily. Her lack of confidence is visible, and is a huge leverage for enemies, such as Hydra. Tony, her older brother, was always after her because of this. Every time they worked together; this was always the problem.
Everyone boarded the Jet. Steve led everyone to their seat and took his own. Of course, everyone was nervous, but not as much as Steve was for Skye. They always had that Love-Hate relationship, and it's always been challenging for both, to talk to each other, without their cheeks heating up. When one of them did something, the other had to be better.
"Well I'll take Sam, Natascha and Skye, then the rest of you will fight them off, in front of the building." Steve explained, pointing to the map, on the black table. "Us four, we have to get inside. Understood?" He asked
"Yes Cap," Skye complied. Her eyes darted in Steve's direction. Their eyes met, and Steve quickly looked away again, to avoid the awkwardness. She zipped up her suit, that was special made, that was sitting tight, showing off her curves. She prepared her weapons, and everyone got in formation as the jet landed.
The team fought through the blockade, of HYDRA agents one by one. The unconscious bodies falling left and right.
"Skye! Over here!" Nat yelled
She turned her focus off the battle for a second and saw what Natascha, wanted to show her. A little passage by the facility and a shadow of a kind. Before she could react, a stinging pain shot through her leg. She felt nauseas. Everything slowed down, as she turned around to face the guy, and shot him. Right in between his eyes. On leg at the time, she got up, and everything turned back to normal.
Steve saw what happened, standing like a complete idiot. He threw his shield and ran over to Skye.
"Steve go, I'll manage!" She was holding her hand over the wound and the blood was spilling out. She winced in pain and got up. Time was once again slow; everything was in slow motion. "What- how?" She mumbled.
~~~
The flight back, wasn't pleasant, most of them was in a bad mood and Steve was extra grumpy. He was talking to Tony and kept looking in Skye's direction, Natascha tried to fix up her wound.
"We will get it next time" Natascha whispered
What they didn't know was that, it wasn't an it, it was a who. Well Skye and Steve knew but that's it. The others thought it was flash drive, that they were getting. No, it was a who.
"I'll be back in a minute" Natascha excused.
She went over to talk to Steve and a loud groan escaped his lips. He glanced over towards Skye but looked away again. His posture change into, the one that Skye hated, why she hated it though? She always thought that Steve Rogers was stripped away from Captain America, and it wasn't healthy. So that iconic Cap stance, wasn't one of her favorites. Captain America wasn't the one she liked, the one she loved. No, that was Steve Rogers.
"Why is he like this? I haven't done anything. He's an annoying idiot who, just doesn't know who he's dealing with," Skye snickered to herself
When the jet landed in the hanger bay, Natascha helped Skye to the infirmary. She was laying on the cold metal table, when Bruce came in. Couple of hours later, the surgery was done, and the bullet was out.
"Okay. You will heal fast, you know. Just be careful next time, Skye." Bruce finished
"Thank you and you know I can't promise you anything" She cheered. Bruce shakes his head as he laughed it off.
Steve was watching from the door. He hadn't said a word since they landed. Bruce helped Skye, on her feet and she limped towards the door, where Steve was standing. He moved out of the way for her.
"Listen, why are you mad?" Skye asked him.
He didn't answer right away. Just when Skye started to walk away, she turned on her heel, he answered.
"I thought we didn't keep secrets from each other?" He questioned. He was clearly annoyed.
She turned around. Looking directly into his ocean eyes. "No of course not. I tell you everything"
"Then why didn't you tell me?" He asked. His posture shifted.
"Tell you what?" She crossed her arms over her chest.
"What happened today?" He asked
"I got shot. Is that's the reason why you won't talk to me?" she snickered
"No... I don't know!" He hissed. He threw his hand up in frustration. "You should Never take your focus off the battle"
"Nat called me, that's why it took my focus off. Well when you're figuring everything out, come talk to me, I have some information."
She limped away and left Steve in the hallway staring at her figure that kept getting smaller, as she moved away from him. He couldn't bear the thought of being mad at her, but with what happened today, it was near impossible not to be. Secrets that's something that can tear a friendship apart.
"Friday, please lock my door after me."
"Yes miss."
