"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" I whisper-yelled as to not wake my family. The monster in the game I was currently playing had managed to defeat me again. "This is bullshit." The words 'play again' seemed to be taunting me, for I had already seen them 7 times. I clicked on it and the screen turned white, characters conversing appeared. I had already memorized the dialogue, so I said it long with the characters in a high pitched voice. After some seconds the battle had begun again so I stayed focus. I tapped on the screen repeatedly, lowering the health of the boss as he shot out rays of light. Both of our healths were low, however, if I could only hit him one more time I would win. So close...
Ding. A notification appeared as I tapped making the screen got to my messages. 'Bitch, no.' I quickly exited and went back to the game, as soon as I did the monster attacked lowering my health down. 'Game over. Try again?' I sucked in a breath, grabbed my nearest pillow and screamed into it. Once I calmed down a bit I went to check my messages again, whoever made me lose would have hell to pay. "Motherfucker! How dare they! " I exclaimed. "Wait, nobody should be able to text me!"
Suddenly I remember my family was asleep in the rooms next to me. Praying my mother hadn't heard that I clicked on the newest message.
It was an unknown number. 'Whatever you do, don't look at the moon.' I scoffed. Typing the words 'I do whatever the fuck I want' I checked the time. I sent the text, the words 'message not sent' appeared. 'Weird. Whatever.' It was currently 2:54 A.M. and I had to get up early to help my dad fix the car. It was currently the second day of summer vacation and my family thought it was a good idea to spend it in the woods. So they rented the cabin in which we are currently staying in. It was a pretty nice site, and it felt good to be away from all the city noises. The only downside was that since we are in the middle of nowhere, there was no signal. Or that's what I thought. Luckily I managed to download some games and movies before we left. A yawn escaped my mouth.
"Time for me to sleep," I muttered. I laid my phone in the drawer next to my bed and started tossing around to find a comfortable position. Just as I was dozing off my phone started buzzing repeatedly. 'Can't a girl get some rest?' Rolling over I reached out for my phone, the screen blinding me once I turned it on. Once I had become accustomed to it, I saw a message after message showing, my phone was still buzzing in my hands. "What the fuck?"
It didn't look like it was going to stop anytime soon. What was weirder was how the texts were all from unknown numbers. As I read them, I realized they were all talking about the moon. I started to get creeped out.
Message A: the moon looks extra beautiful today!
Message B: Take a peek outside, the moon is shining brightly!
Message C: It's a beautiful night out.
Message D: Look at the moon!
A nervous smile made its way onto my face as I sat up and leaned onto the headboard. I'd be lying if I said, I couldn't feel a twinge of fear. I wanted to go to my parent's room but I knew they wouldn't believe me. "Okay Lor, calm down. Everything will be okay. Maybe it's just a prank. Involving hundreds of people..."
I tried to remain passive although it was hard when you're receiving hundreds of messages a minute from random strangers. With time the texts started to get creepier, some even included threats. My ringtone started to play out, a random number was on the screen along with the options to decline or accept the call. I stared at the words nervously, my favorite song was playing in the background. Growing some courage the accepted the call and rose the phone next to my ear. "H-hello?" I stuttered out. There was a deep chuckle on the other side of the line, a guy. It sent shivers down my spine. "Am I talking to Esme Vequaniel?" he questioned. He didn't sound too friendly. I inhaled and with the best voice I could, spoke out, "no sir, you seem to have gotten the wrong number." I prayed he would just hang up, so I could deal with the other problem.
"Hmmm, I was sure I had the right one. You aren't lying to me, are you? I don't like it when people lie." It sounded like a warning. I swallowed hard, my palms were beginning to sweat. "No sir, you truly have the wrong number. And if you would excuse me, it's late and I have to sleep." I wanted to hang up, but my manners held me from doing so. He started to laugh, his laughter was what I could describe as maniacal. "You bitch! You lying bitch! Just answer honestly and I'll spare you!" I was starting to get irritated. I hadn't done anything for him to insult me. "I am telling the truth! My name's Lorraine! I don't know anyone with the name Esme! I also won't sit here and be insulted by someone I don't know! Goodbye, sir!" I exclaimed. The last thing I heard before I hung up was his psychopathic laugh and a threat. "You'll regret it!"
I rubbed my temple, a headache started to appear. The messages seemed to stop coming in. 'I probably woke up someone.' Just as I thought, there was some banging in the room to my left, which is the one my parents are. Sighing, I stood up from my bed and walked to the door, I was definitely in trouble for screaming at 3. I was just going to use the opportunity to tell them what happened. I opened the door and I also saw my sister getting out of her room with some empty plates. "Hey, I heard you yelling. Mom's going to kill you," she whispered with a comforting smile on her face. I rolled my eyes. "No shit sherlock." She put the dishes on a small table that was next to the door in her bedroom and stood there watching. I knocked twice on the door, "mom? Dad? Are you awake?" Nothing.
I looked back at Bethany. She shrugged. "Perhaps you didn't wake them up." I was skeptical. "Mom's a light sleeper, and I did yell pretty loudly so she should have woken up," I said. "Yeah, well you di-"
She was cut off by some more banging on the other side of the room, some mumbling could also be heard. I turned towards the door again. "Hey, I'm coming in. So if you're doing anything, uhh, inappropriate stop." I turned the knob and pushed open the door. Inside were our parents facing the other way, everything appeared to be normal. "I was starting to worry since you wouldn't answer, is everything ok-"
I couldn't even finish my sentence since they had turned around leaving me speechless. There was foam coming out their mouth, their eyes seemed to be glossed over and unfocusing. There was blood pouring down from their eyes. I heard a gasp come from behind, so I knew Bethany saw the same thing as me. I felt my stomach tighten as I took in their appearance. Their eyes finally focused on us and they started tumbling towards us.
