"Helen, can you look after Sammy?" Mom asked me.

"I promised Katniss that I will be there in the woods so she can teach me how to hunt," I told her. Hoping she wouldn't make me stay home.

"Why?" Sammy asked, coming out from the dining room. He was seven.

"Because I might be chosen for the Hunger Games and I want to be able to survive."

"Stay home sweetie," Mom begged.

"I can't, I have to get food for the family and I need practice with my bow."

"Fine. Come home before dusk."

"Can I come with you?" asked Sammy.

"No," Mom said.

I walked out of the house, shivering. I would have brought my coat but I needed to leave before Mom changed her mind. I got to the woods.

"What took you so long?" Katniss asked.

"Mom," I answered plainly. Not wanting to say anymore. I just wanted to get started before I lost anymore time.

"I see she needed your help," somebody said. I turned around. It was Gale.

"Yep."

"Get your bow," Katniss ordered.

I got my bow. Gale and I ran to catch up to Katniss. Gale, my secret crush, has brown hair and brown eyes. I know him so much that I think I know him better then he knows himself. But sadly I don't think he likes me.

"Where did she go?" Gale asked. I didn't know that I was running blindly.

"I thought you were looking," I said.

"There's your lesson if you're in the Hunger Games: don't rely on your partner. If you're not looking he could kill you."

"Oh." I never thought about that.

"There she is. Be quiet."

We creeped up then stopped suddenly.

"She's hunting," Gale whispered.
