"Miss McShire?" The voice rang out over the classroom. Tempest McShire's head shot up as she rubbed her eyes. Seriously? Fell asleep again... "Yes?" She muttered. "You were alsee-" Tempest's anger bubbled up. "Asleep? Yeah, I know. Maybe if you assigned less homework I would get some, you fat cow." She spat. Then the regret creeped over. She had just called her teacher a 'fat cow'. For the second time that week. She was in a truckload of trouble. She barely heard anything the teacher said after that, all she saw was red. She disregarded anything anyone had said and she marched out into the hallway and into the bathroom. She whipped out her phone and began typing.

Hey, I have news.
Then the reply from her best friend.

Yes? Don't tell me you got into trouble again.
Oh, fantastic. Lexie wasn't too happy about it.

Haha, you guessed it. I called Ms. Laney a 'fat cow' today! Lol

The phone rang. Of course, it was Lexie. Her best friend since diapers. She picked up.
"Tempest McShire here, calling women cows since 2001!" She announced proudly, yet sarcastically. "Really, Tempest?" Lexie's smooth voice, laced with a thick Norwegian accent, spoke. "Just because you're tired doesn't mean you can do that." "Yes, I know. It's not my fault I feel like I'm being watched every night!" Tempest argued. "Whatever. I'll come pick you up I guess." Lexie sighed. "Hey, it's not fair how you get to have your own car and you don't have to go to stupid school." Tempest said, lightening up the situation. "Yeah, well I was born in 2000, and I finished school last year, so ha!" She said in her infamous news broadcaster voice. Tempest shook her head, whispered an "Love you, pal." and hung up. She slumped down onto the floor and laughed.

10 minutes later

A big voice boomed over the loudspeaker across Griffonville High School. "Tempest McShire, ready to leave!" It called. She couldn't help but smirk. Her cow of a teacher was probably seething. Tempest had yelled at her, called her names, ran out, then went home. How lucky was she? Not lucky at all. Tomorrow would be the equivalent of hell.
Yay, how fantastic. She thought bitterly. She had already grabbed everything, so she headed out the door. There was Lexie, in her gray Nissan. She rolled down the window and pulled off her dark sunglasses. "Heyo, troublemaker!" She laughed. Tempest plopped down into the car and threw a dirty look at Lexie. "I did what I had to do." She raised her chin. "Whatever." Lexie said as they sped off.

When they reached her house, they stepped out of the car. Lexie was tall and skinny, with long blonde hair and blue-green eyes. She had perfect skin and always smelled slightly like vanilla, whereas Tempest was a little shorter and skinny as well. Tempest had dark brown hair with blonde highlights and gray-blue eyes. 'Sterling Blue' she called them. She had long eyelashes and tended to wear mostly black, and her favorite red plaid jacket around her waist. She wasn't afraid to cuss, and she had low self-esteem.

The made their way into the house and turned on a movie. A little later, Tempest peered out the window. It was darker outside, a foggy gray, like a thin haze of smoke. It's nothing, she told herself time after time. But it, in fact, was something. And she never stopped thinking of it.
