Hide. Wait. Run.
The wind grazed green grass,
leading to the horses.
They eyed the barn warily.
I let my gaze wander up the barn.
Then I saw them-
a shiver ran down my spine.
Murderous green eyes stared at me.
SLAM!
I started to hyperventilate-
Holding the door shut didn’t hold back my fears.
I still heard his deadly pawsteps-
Now walking outside the barn door.
A whimper escaped my lips,
Imagining those strong jaws around my leg.
It must have been some hours later,
for I didn’t hear those deadly pawsteps.
Creeping out, my feet ran fast,
and I found myself under a tree-
the tree of doom.
Growling.
Growling-
From above.
My eyes wandered up to meet his.
Fast as lighting,
I raced out of reach.
A gasp escaped me when I turned around-
The cougar followed me.
“Go away!” I screeched.
“You stupid, foolish thing!
To pick upon a child!”
Pain stumbled into his eyes,
And he shriveled away.
I ran to my mother,
And gave her a hug.
Safe. At last.
