To JoPRBooks

Tempted to sit there and play
Just to see if her emotions were still controlled by her fingers on the keys
It's too much of a risk
But isn't not knowing a bigger one

It failed her. The unknown
Not knowing was the worst thing she could ever do to herself
Years before, she would have let it go After all, the unknown hadn't always failed her

Be the unknown
The camouflage they want to see
She would tell herself and march out in utter satisfaction of her blank thoughts numbed down by the effects of her candy

But not anymore. Time molds you
It breaks away into a form that isn't you
Has never been you
But now it will be
It will overshadow your entire being until the past would be undefinable The future inevitable
And the present a sheet of numb thoughtlessness you perceive to be nothing more than a passing phase

Why the turmoil, you must ask
Why not just sit there, see your fingers dance across the keys like they once did oh so effortlessly
But not anymore
It was no longer a dance you see
It was a battle
A battle of her fingers trampling on those god forsaken keys, begging it, fighting it, to not say, to not remind her of the times she tried so hard to forget by suppressing them under her broken molds
'Naive' the keys snickered

It took her a minute too long to comprehend the sound that filled the room
It was heartbreakingly beautiful.
A story of a misfortunate soul that spent years running from the unknown, now succumbing to the reality she loathed

But why did the tune sound like a victory and not her defeat
Why did the tune, that sang her past, breaking through her once numb mind
Not make her quiver in disgust of all the things she had done
Not make her scratch her face like she wanted to get rid of her identity  Not make her claw her neck like she wanted to choke herself
Not be all of the reasons she stopped playing.

She smiled, looking at the one thing that had always been there for her with so much love her heart burst They smiled back at her in awe
They were no longer snickering
They no longer saw a coward that stared at them everyday in passing, not once sitting and having the courage to see if they still defined her undefinable past
Instead, the keys saw a misguided soul that had come a long way from self loathing to conquering her demons and realising that it was never the keys she hated
It was the delusion that all the memories she binded with them were something she had to fear, not learn from.
