When i was living un París during the spring and part of the summer of 18..., i met a man called C. Auguste Dupin.
He came from a very good family dut, for a number of reasons, he had become very poor. As a result he was very depressed and dib not have the spirit needed to retrieve his fortune. However , he still had a small part of his patrimony and from the income which came from this , he managed to pay for the basic necessities of life. Books were his only luxuries and in París these are easy to obtain.
We first met in the Rue Montmartre, where , by coincidence, we were both looking for the same book.
We saw each other again and again. I was very interested in his family history, whick he talked about quite openly. I was astonished too by how much he had read and his vivid imagination fed my soul. I thought his friendship would be a priceless treasure and this feeling i confided to him.
We decide to live together during my stayin the city. We chase an old mansión in a run-down part of Faubourg St. Germain. It had been adandoned a long time ago fue to the superstitions which surrounded it. As my economic situation was more favourable than his, i paid the rent and bought the furniture.
