The True Story

It was a lazy summer afternoon in the year of 2000 something or other. I sat, surrounded by my shrine-like collection of Spongebob Squarepants merchandise. Included among these items were plushies, posters, coloring books, and even a spongebob rectal thermometer. I had it all and was living the life every man wanted to live.

"Time for video game!" I gagged out loud, as if there were little men in the walls listening to me and I wasn't talking to myself. From the left pocket of my Spongebob themed shorts, my GameBoy Advance emerged. "Alas, I can play Spongebob SquarePants: SuperSponge for the GBA." I snorted, once again presumably to the imaginary wall goblins. Now firmly in my hands, the Gameboy booted up, emitting the classic jingle and logo combination. That, if I were to hear nowadays, my pores would ooze with nostalgia.

 Following was a brief copyright notice, and then the Nickelodeon and THQ logos respectively. My excitement would no longer settle for containment. The final logo was for a company called CLIMAX, being the immature child I was, I snickered, before screaming in humor at the funny thought I had just had. The game began, I set my preferences before selecting Start New Game, and then chose the level Jellyfish Fields.

 As with all self-respecting SpongeBob fanboys, I had already played all the games in the GBA Spongebob trilogy many times before. That fact obviously did not affect my ability to enjoy a fresh playthrough from time to time. So the game began, same story as always. Spongebob must gather the materials to form a seanut butter, lettuce and jellyfish jelly sandwich for Mermaid Man, in exchange for an autograph which spongebob would then gift to Patrick for his birthday. I was on the first stage, after receiving a power up from Squidward I made my way across the level.

 "This is so easy!" I snarled with delight, before swallowing my enthusiasm after remembering it was only the first level, and then choking violently on my enthusiasm upon realizing this level wasn't as I remembered it at all. Spongebob was the same but Jellyfish Fields looked all dried up and sad, the coral was all grey and dead. And the spatula collectables were instead replaced with plastic bottles and garbage. I thought, perhaps, this was just a silly easter egg. Perhaps a clever nod to the fact that humans are slowly destroying the planet we live on.

 However, it was then that I saw it. All the enemy designs had been replaced with gruesome photo realistic versions, clearly not possible for the technology of the time. I got an uneasy feeling as it became apparent, this wasn't intentional game design, this was some kind of glitch. Swiftly I expelled the cartridge, not wanting it to corrupt my Gameboy. There was a Gary plush in my lap, I hugged it tightly and fell asleep in tears, unable to comprehend the horrors I had just witnessed. 

 While asleep I had a dream, I was alone in a dark infinite void, the familiar horrific enemy designs emerged from every corner of the darkness. I trembled in fear, before, out of nowhere, I felt a soft spongy texture grab my leg. I looked down and it was SpongeBob, but in his pixely two dimensional GBA form. "Spongebob?" I wondered. "Don't worry Ryan, I will keep you safe." He chortled, and then hugged my leg, it was comforting and I felt safe. "My name isn't Ryan." I woke up after that. 

 "Whew, what a weird dream!" I monologued, returning from slumber. A voice behind me was quick to intrude. "That wasn't just a dream." a shiver entered through my spine. I recognized the voice, and turned around to see Spongebob himself, standing on my bed, this was unusual. He looked as he did in the dream being low res and pixely like in the game, and he was rather small, about the size of a real life kitchen sponge, with the addition of his little arms and legs. 

 "Spongebob? You're real!" I screeched with excitement. Spongebob smiled and then climbed into the palm of my hand, giving my index finger a small hug. "Indeed I am real, and my world is in grave danger." Spongebob explained calm but stern. "I don't understand! I was playing your video game and everything went grim and dark, It's never done that before, I got so scared." I gargled in hope of answers.
