new beginnings

Sitting in the car, listening to the low hum on the radio. I reach over and shut it off. I can hear the rain pelting on the roof. The darkness outside the window is almost telling me to come out into the rain. Like when I was a kid and would dance around in the rain with my siblings.

But not tonight. Tonight the mood was gruesome and I wanted nothing more to drive off but I just couldn't. Fiddling with the hem on my jacket trying to find a way to get out of the car. I look down to see the promise ring he got me. It still sparkles like the day he gave it to me.

"Cmon Lia you can do this." I tell myself but, in the back of my mind all I hear is "he's gonna hate you".

Finally gathering up enough strength I get out of the car, putting my hood up and walking the length of the driveway to the front door.

Taking a deep breathe, I ring the doorbell then knock. I can hear my heart beating so fast and my palms are sweating. There's no lights on but his car is in the driveway. I know his parents are gone for the night.

Suddenly the foyer light turns on and he looks through the side window, eyes growing big when he sees me. The door opens fast and I'm still rethinking why I didn't just go when I had the chance.

"Amelia baby what are you doing?" He grabs my arm and pulls me in. "You're freezing love, take your jacket off"

I feel anything but cold. He still takes the jacket off of me. Though I haven't said one word to him.

"Lia baby? What's going on? Why are you here? You didn't tell me you were coming over." He holds me by my face, his large hands cupping my cheeks.

He's taller than me, standing at 6'3 when I'm only 5'5. I look up into those pale blue eyes I fell in love with. His brown hair is thrown around, looking like he just woke up.

"Eli I-I have to tell you something." I finally manage to speak. God this is harder than I thought.

"You sound serious." He nervously chuckles and grabs my hand leading me to the couch in the family room.

"Eliot, remember when I told you I did something crazy? Well i applies to NYU and I got accepted and I'm going to go..." I look down, playing with my thumbs. It's quiet and I know that's not a good sign.

Coming from a town in Texas, where no one ever leaves. I, of course took it upon myself to change that and risk everything I had with Eliot. Even though I knew one day he would leave to do what he loves best, football.

He was the star of our town. Everyone knew his name, adored him. Eliot James was the golden boy around here. We fell in love merely at the age of 14. Young of course but, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. But I risked everything for my future.

"Amelia what the fuck? Why didn't you tell me? I thought we told everything to each other." He finally cut through the thick tension in the room.

"I didn't know how to tell you Eli. You would tell me to go but I knew you would have never meant it. You wanted me to go to with you to A&M and at first I did but now I just can't."

He had gotten a full ride to Texas A&M. We were going to go together until the accident that left me and my family broken.

Last fall my family and I were taking a trip to see my grandma when we got hit head first by a semi. Me and my dad survived. But my mom and twin brothers, Rian and Mason, died.

It hit us hard. My dad hasn't been the same. He wants to leave with me to New York since we have family up there. He has been supportive of me the whole way. Though I know he's broken inside.
