Peter Parker was having a good day.
Technically, that was not true.
He had woken up late because his alarm had been unplugged sometime during the night. Aunt May had been passed out on the couch when he slipped into the kitchen, one arm hanging over the side, an empty bottle tipped over on the floor beside her.
There had been no breakfast.
There usually wasn't.
Then Flash Thompson had shoved him into the lockers before first period and told him Stark Industries must have started a daycare program.
Peter had laughed.
Because laughing was easier.
Because if he laughed first, maybe it hurt less.
And now he was standing in the lobby of Stark Industries, clutching his intern badge while a security guard stared at him like he had personally offended him by existing.
"The school tour is on the third floor," the man said.
Peter blinked.
"Oh, no, I'm not here for the tour. I'm an intern."
The guard looked him up and down.
Peter tried not to shrink.
He knew what he looked like.
Too young.
Too skinny.
Too nervous.
Definitely not like someone who belonged in a building full of geniuses.
"You're an intern?"
Peter lifted his badge.
"Yes, sir."
The guard scanned it.
A green light flashed.
AUTHORIZED.
The man's eyebrows rose.
Peter forced a smile.
"Surprise?"
The guard handed the badge back without answering.
Peter hurried toward the elevators before anyone could change their mind.
He was the youngest intern Stark Industries had ever accepted.
His guidance counselor had told him that three times, like she still did not believe it herself. His teachers had called it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Flash had called it a pity placement.
Peter had called it impossible.
And yet here he was.
In Stark Industries.
With a real badge.
And real responsibilities.
Mostly filing things.
And organizing cables.
And getting coffee.
But still.
Real.
The elevator doors opened.
Peter stepped inside and exhaled.
"Good morning, Peter."
Peter smiled before he could stop himself.
"Morning, JARVIS."
"Your heart rate is elevated."
"That's because security still thinks I'm twelve."
"You are fifteen."
