Rose sits on her bed. Staring at the darkness that she knew. She stood up and grabbed one of her blindfolds. She preferred wearing blindfolds rather than having people asking her why she is staring at nothing. She turns 14 today. Her best friend walked in as she was tying the blindfold around her eyes. "Hey Rose!" Lily happily says. "Hey Lily." Rose responds smiling. "Are you ready for your birthday party?!" Lily exclaims loudly. Rose winces slightly. "Lily quieter please. Yes i am ready." Rose traces her hand across the wall until she finds the door.
They walk together to the kitchen. Lily directs Rose to a seat. Her parents never did anything big for her birthdays. Rose sits down and her mother puts a plate down infront of her and hands her a fork. "Thanks mom!" Rose happily sajob lys and starts eating her piece of what tasted like strawberry cake. She heard everyone else sitting down and eating.
After they eat, her father starts giving her presents. "This one is from Lily." He said. She opens the gift and feel something fluffy and kind of fox like shaped. "Its a stuffed fox!" Lily exclaims, clearing that up for Rose.
This went on for about 30 minutes. "Last gift." Her father said as he set a semi heavy box on her lap. She smiled as she opened it to feel a book. It was in braille so she could read it. The title was 'The Basics of Magic'. She giggles. "That one was from your brother in Japan." Her mother says.
Later that night, Rose had laid down with her fox plushie whom she named Steve, and her new book. She lay there running her finger over the bumps on the old pages. She heard a bang beside her and looked over. She saw a strange figure but brushed it off as just not getting enough sleep.
Not to long after, Rose fell asleep. The book fell on the floor. And she hugged Steve.
Rose woke up later, at around 4 am. She saw creatures flying over her bed and one standing over her. She felt as if it was holding her down. She couldn't move. She couldn't scream. It seemed to growl silently they all disappeared.
She slowly fell back to sleep.
She woke up at 7 and brushed of the memory of the creatures as a simple nightmare. "Sweetheart, time for school." Her mother walked in and said. "Okay momma. Im up." Rose replied.
She got up and got dressed and put a blindfold on. It was a new one she just got. It had an amazing design embroidered on it. Her grandmother had made it for her.
She whistled and her guide dog nudged her leg. Her guide dog, Rex, was a German Shepherd. She has had Rex since she was 10. Rex was specially trained to lead Rose to and from school and get Rose's things.
"I need my stuff Rex." Rose said. She patted her leg once and Rex ran off to get her stuff. Rose went to the kitchen and ate the plate of pancakes her mother had made for her.
Rex put her stuff down and yipped saying he was there. Rose giggled and pet Rex. She picked up her backpack and put it on. "Leash." Rose ordered. Rex walked away and brought back his leash. Rose clipped it on and off they went.
Lily met them halfway, and they walked to school together from there, and Rex left for home.
"Hey Lily, I had a weird dream last night." Rose said to her friend, as they walked towards the doors of the school. "Oh yeah? What was it?" Lily asked curiously. "I dont really know, it was like these weird demon creatures were everywhere, then they all just disappeared. But, i swear i was awake." Rose said. Lily laughed a little bit, "Yeah that does sound like a weird dream." The bell rang and they parted ways, Rose to her math class, Lily to her English.
During math class, one of Rose's classmates said something about a new student. Ezra, is what they called him. From what she heard about him, he is deaf, and completely colorblind. "He is supposed to be starting tomorrow." "Is he cute?" "Hes Deaf he wont be able to do anything." Three girls said to each other. They all laughed causing a low annoyed growl from Rose. They were the school bullies. Rose got bullied alot for her blindness. Only verbally, but that hurt more than physically would. Rose took a deep breath and continued her work, suddenly excited about the new kid.
After school, Lily and Rose met outside, and they started walking. On their walk, Rose kept seeing flashes of things in the corner of her eyes, which scared her, but they continued walking and talking about the new boy. 'Maybe he could be a new friend' Rose thought, as Lily dropped her off at her home.
