Hetty

Two months later we're sitting in quarantine at a top notch hospital near Camp Nash. Perfect. This is exactly what I wanted. But there's nothing we can do about it. The world knows we're alive now and that's as much as I could hope for. Interviews after interviews happened the first few weeks, our voices echoing through the enclosure as the journalists recorded us.

"You went to your mother's house, after you got out of the boat?" the current woman interviewing us asks. She's in a classic pantsuit get up, modern, and she's had this look of pity and horror on her face the whole time. It's starting to annoy me.

"Yes," I replied. Gosh. How long does this have to go on, she could just read all of mine and Reese's answers in any newspaper. Reese and I are in one room, Byatt in another. It took days of begging to get Byatt nearer to us. Because she doesn't have the Tox anymore she can't be in quarantine with us, so the best the hospital could do was put her in a room next to us.

The journalist can tell I'm burnt out so she moves on to Reese who is sitting a few feet away from me on a bed. I flash her an eye roll and mouth "good luck." She makes eye contact, and gives me and eye roll back. The interview ends in twenty minutes.

When we arrived at mom's house months ago she flipped out and thought I was a ghost. I rang the bell and after the fifth ring mom answered. Tears welled in my eyes at the sight of her.

"He- Hetty?" She stuttered, almost a whisper. Half her face was visible in the light outside.

"MOM!" Every feeling I had for my family, thought long gone, came rushing back. Of course I couldn't hug her. She'd get the Tox. I had to back away so she didn't touch me and tell her not to come too close. She finally let us in, Reese and I lay Byatt on the couch and settled in chairs in the living room.

It took hours to explain. The Tox, Raxter, everything. I condensed it down enough, leaving out things we didn't have time for, and told her we needed to get to a hospital. So here we are. The world knows we're alive again, it's a good feeling, hope. For the first time in two years I truly believe we'll survive.

Finally the journalist leaves and we're left alone for a while. "Hey," Reese says, her braid as bright as ever and eyes twinkling.

"Hey," I turn to her and stand up, we're free to walk around this room but can't go out.

"That was our last interview, right?"

"I hope so," I move closer to her, she holds out her hand and I take it.

"When are we getting out of here?" I take another step towards her. Plastic crackles under my weight. The whole room is covered in it.

Reese laughs, "Later than I expected, all these precautionary measures are killing me."

Ugh. It feels like I've had forty blood tests and about one hundred other medical procedures just to make sure we won't pass the Tox on. Luckily they were able to remove the parasites within the first two weeks, recovery was one week, and yet we're still waiting to be released. Even Byatt is still here.

"No kidding," I answer, pulling her in closer, and our noses touch. My eyes scan the area. No one in sight.

"Maybe we-"

I kiss her. My eyes close and our bodies match like puzzle pieces. Her back curves, I put my arm on her waist, her silver hand holding my cheek. Our fingers stay entangled as our lips slowly part. Her breath is hot on my face.

"Never mind," she smiles. I giggle and look into her eyes. Grinning, she kisses me again. This time she strokes my hair as our lips touch, I feel her scaled fingers on my scalp as I back into the wall. This feels so right.

"Looks like you two are having fun."

To be continued. . .
