As a 17-year-old living in a small town, I'd considered myself to have a relatively normal upbringing. Sure, nobody's homelife was perfect, but it had never occurred to me that the way we are raised would become part of who we are later on in life. Being ignored by my parents for most of my life had left me seeking some sort of acceptance from anyone willing to provide it, a need to feel wanted and heard. It made me want to be the best, to do everything right so that maybe I could achieve something that would make my parents proud of me. I studied hard, made good grades and was on the path to Yale... until I met him.
My life got turned upside down, and what was meant to be a smooth senior year ended up being a turbulent, life changing experience that would alter the course of my future forever.
