I stared off into the distance feeling empty, devoid of any emotion in that moment. The only thought that kept coming to me continuously was, "I can't believe I'm homeless". This had to be some kind of record, imagine being kicked out onto the street at the age of 18 with nowhere else to go. Just my luck.
The part of me that had already given up on living found the situation utterly hilarous and completely pathetic.
If I had the opportunity to, I would go back and strangle my poor excuse of a father. Too bad he conveniently decided to disappear of the face of the earth before I got to him. I thought to myself bitterly .
I looked up towards the night sky from my seated position on a bench in some park with what little belongings I had around me. The cool August air hit my face in soothing comfort. I slowly shut my eyes and let my mind take me back to the beginning.
Back to the beginning of my misfortune.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
*BEEP*
*BEEP*
*BEE-
Before my alarm could finish its 3rd beep, my calloused hand came down on it with unimaginable force.
I didn't want to wake up, I wanted to stay under my warm covers and hide away from the sunlight for the rest of my life. But I knew that couldn't happen.
I squeezed my eyes shut tighter, preparing them for the onslaught of the sun's rays. My plan backfired and before I knew it I was dozing off again. Just as I was about to fully succumb to sleep I heard the sound of rustling to my right.
Slowly cracking one eye open, I look in the direction of the sound and see a little gray ball of fur digging head first into a convenience store bag I had laying beside me.
"Nora?" I croaked.
My voice was raspy and my lips dry from not being used. The little ball of fur quickly stopped its rustling and poked its head up in my direction.
Not moving from my position on my makeshift bed, I stared at her.
We both silently looked at each other for a good 10 seconds before she leapt onto my mattress and began nuzzling her face into the side of mine. Her whiskers tickled my nose and her purring vibrated through me weakly.
That gave me all the motivation I needed to get up.
"You must be hungry, huh?"
I threw the covers of me and hand crawled over to the convenience store bag leaving half my body still in bed. I pulled out a couple of cat treats and placed them in front of Nora.
As she ate them up I drifted off into thought. I mentally planned my whole day out.
It wasn't very eventful. All I had to do was go to work and buy groceries on my way back home. Simple. Now I just have to pull myself together and overcome the lethargic feeling that always plagued my existence. I took a deep breath and stood up out of bed.
I raised my arms into the air and stretched as best as I could until the shaky feeling of my muscles tensing shook my body.
I lived in a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment with my father. It was run down but it was also all we could afford. Stepping on the old, creaky, wood floors I made my way to the living Room where I expected said father to be.
Peeking in I saw him passed out on the couch with the TV still on and empty beer bottles littered around him. Looking up to a clock on the wall, I saw I still had time to quickly clean and make breakfast.
As quietly as I could, I carefully picked up clusters of beer bottles and placed them in the recycle bin. As well as cleaning off the coffee table from his overturned ash tray.
I quietly placed a blanket from our storage closet and carefully laid it over him. I didn't want to disturb his sleep.
By the time I was done the birds outside quit their chirping, alerting me that the early morning was over. I took this as a sign to start getting ready myself.
Sluggishly I walked over to our small bathroom and locked the door behind me. Looking at myself in the mirror, I saw tired brown eyes looking back at me.
My wavy, shoulder length, dark brown hair was sticking out north, east, and south. West was just a knotted mess that didn't need to be further mentioned.
I quickly showered and got dressed in simple black Jeans and a plain white button up shirt.
Breakfast consisted simply of scrambled eggs of toast. I made sure to leave a generous amount for dad when he woke up, I knew that hangover would knock him on his ass when he woke up.
I threw my satchel over my shoulder and walked to the front door where I slipped on my worn out black flats.
Nora came up behind me ready to follow me out and do whatever she did in her spare time as a stray.
When I wasn't around she would live her life as an animal in the wild. Until, well, at least until she decided she wanted to be pampered and sneaks in through any open window she can find.
Tucking my hair behind an ear and taking in a deep breath, I put my hand on the door knob and began my venture into another day. A day in my daily mundane life, that was supposed to be the same as any other.
A day I'd unknowingly never forget.
