The day was bleak and drowsy when it happened, the Athenian raid on Sparta. They came on their immense warships, eagles on the sterns, bowmen on the deck, and their general, Cleon commandeering the fleet. They sent a rain of fire with their arrows, it lit up the clouds and seemed brighter than the sun. It took us at least two hours to get to the coast and fight back against Athens.
I am Adrastos meaning "One who holds his ground." I am a Spartan soldier and I battle on behalf of Archidamus II, our king. We fight because Athens is becoming a threat with their naval power. We have the finest army in all of Greece, yet they dare to raid our great city. We fought their fleet with great ferocity and anger, they shoot another volley of arrows, yet none of the can even dent our shields of bronze. We eventually drove them away, but this is not the last we will see of Cleon.
In the fortress of Sparta a scout is reporting to Archidamus. "What news do you bring to me Phobos?" "I have seen the Athenian armies marching down the valley of Eurotas, sir." "May Ares give us his blessing. We will wait for them at the end of the valley, Cleon has sent his soldiers on a suicide mission by threatening us." Archidamus replied. "Of course, sir. I will inform them at the barracks." In the barracks, where all Spartan men live, there was a brawl taking place, there seemed to be a disagreement over who was stronger Adrastos or his rival, Demetrius. Demetrius was a rather large person, with broad shoulders and seemed like mountain with his height. Demetrius was not a Spartan, in fact he was Persian. But because of the alliance between Sparta and Persia, he decided to stay at Sparta. He may have been much larger, but Adrastos was far more cunning. Adrastos was about to pin him to the wall, but was interrupted by Phobos, the scout.
What are you doing here Phobos? He promptly replied, "I have come to tell you to ready for war, you march to the end of the valley of Eurotas in the cover of night." "If we win this, we may get Athens to surrender and finally end this!" Demetrius exclaimed. But of course it was not that simple.
