The first ring of the phone echoed through the apartment but Brian was too busy laying on the bed trying to read a book while listening to some music on his record player. Who in the right state of mind would call him on a Sunday afternoon?
On the second ring, he decided to just ignore it, but the noise really started to bother him because it was interfering with Hendrix's guitar solo.
When it got to the third one he thought it would be better to pick it up because he knew exactly who it was and what it wanted; so he stepped out of bed and prayed to the sky that he wasn't right while walking to the living room, hearing the forth agonizing ring.
The fifth ring finally came, whoever was calling was very persistent, which only made him even more nervous. He took the phone off the hook and led it to his ear, saying an inpatient "hello".
"Brian, finally, what took you so long?" A desperate female voice responds on the other side of the line just as he predicted.
"I'm sorry Janice, I was busy." doing the absolute nothing.
"Oh, I'm sorry, was it too important? I can call you later" Please don't...
"No it's fine, how are you?" He wasn't on his talkative side at the moment, but not asking that question just sounded rude to him, it was the least he could do.
"I'm fine, but I really miss you, we haven't been talking or seeing each other much lately" And there was a reason, he was ignoring her. Janice, overall, wasn't a bad person, or someone that would do something to hurt you in any way, but she was just... Annoying, in her own way. Sure, she and Brian matched in various aspects, he was finishing studying astrophysics and she was a mathematician that had just started giving classes in a high school - God help those children -. But matching academically didn't really help, they were just very different from each other, not just her, but any woman he dated lately, and Brian was starting to notice it, even more, every day, and wanted to give an end to this relationship. "You've very distant you know..."
"I'm sorry, you know how college can be crazy at times. I've been busy with the work, that's all"
"I really miss you, can't you just come over?" Brian wasn't doing anything at the moment, it was the opportunity he needed for a breakup.
"I guess... We do have some stuff to talk about."
"That's great! But I think we could do more than talk, see you later sweetie." The words "more than talk" made him shiver, and not in a good way.
"Alright then... Bye" after hearing a kiss sound the line went dead and he put the phone on the hook where it belonged.
"What was I thinking when I started dating this girl?" He thought to himself.
The night he met Janice Brian wasn't thinking straight because he was drunk at this party he was invited to. In fact, he was even checking out some guys, but he thought it was a side effect of the booze.
He decided it would be best if he just ended everything instead of making it longer and agonizing, just rip the band-aid already.
Brian grabbed a jacket, keys and headed to the door, but not before checking his curls in the mirror to see if they were just in place.
Before reaching the door handle he heard a crinkly noise coming from under his foot, he forgot to pick up the mail. It wasn't anything important anyway, just some propaganda for an art exposition, "Royal" something. Without any more distractions, he was finally making his way to the car.
