It was the spring of 1861, Rose was in her childhood home taking lessons from her Mother on how to be a "Proper Young Lady". Being a Southern Belle that was one thing that was at the top of her Mothers List. Her Mother wanted her to marry well and know her place in life. She was from one of the most prominent familys in the Virginias. Her Family was one of the first settlers in the area. There have always been rumors whispered about her family but no one really believed them. They were in the drawing room when a servent came in and told her mother there was a messenger there to see her and her father. Rose was told to stay and continue her needlework, but as soon as her parents were out of sight. she snuck out and was listening to the exchange. He was telling them the was was approaching and they needed to leave the plantation immediately. Her Mother not being the typical woman of the time immediately sprung into action. Getting everyone on their individual task. Being a strong woman was exspected in her family. In trying times you didnt have time to take to the vapors or swoon.
Her mother calles her and told her if she wasnt going to do what she was told then she may as well go pack her bags. Rose had no idea how her mother knew she was there but she always seem to know when she or anyone did something they weren't supposed to. All she could do was say yes mother and scamper past her up to her room. She started to gather her things and pile them on her bed. She didnt know where they would be going so she tried to pack for any ocation that may arise. She starting folding her things and putting then in her bags trying to remember everything she would need. as she did a servant came in and started helping. She has always been Rose's fvoriate servent in the house. Always so helpful and kind, Rose always thought of her like a second mother. she had been with them from the time Rose was born. Rose sat on the bed and was fighting back tears, Mary wraped her arms around her and told her everything was going to be ok. She strightened her back dryed her tears, Mary looked at her with pride in her
eyes and said there is my girl. Rose stood and gave Mary a kiss on the cheek and thanked her. She picked up her bag and started to drag it down stairs. There were people running around in all directions tring to do her mothers biddding. As she was a force to be reckoned with when she put her mind to something. As she got one of her bags to the top of the steps the front door burst open and one of the other servents yelled out that there were soldiers were coming up the driveway. My mother and I made eye contact and she told me to hide, I ran to the linen closet and slid behide the wall. the house was built by my great grand father and he had secret passages all through out the house. I had played in them as a child and knew them very well, unless you knew about them you would never find them.
