A light breeze was blowing in through the room's single open window. The announcements were going to ring any second and half the class has already got their homework set out, finished, on their desks.
Great. I have forgotten to finish my homework.
PAUSE.
Little did I know, of course, that would not be the biggest of my worries that day.
What would take that trophy was to come in about 5 minutes- right after announcements were over.
So I'll let you see what happened for yourself.
PLAY.
While I was scribbling in what could have been, and most likely was, wrong answers, the intercom clicked on and announcements began.
"Good Morning, Goodwin Mastiffs! I am pleased to announce that we will be resuming construction on the West wing of the school! If you have classes there, please relocate to the auditorium, as you have been since construction started. No more odd sounds from the pipes...hopefully...
Moving on, please do not cross the tape that has been placed around the school for your own safety. Remember to be the best person you can and do your best! Go Goodwin Mastiffs!" The intercom clicked back off as quickly as it had turned on and everyone began to sit back down.
It was quiet for a second, and then I saw the window curtain shaking- then the floor, ever so slightly, and suddenly out of nowhere, a boom, shaking the entire school.
The window slams shut as everyone around me starts freaking out, saying that someone has detonated a bomb, school shooting this, construction that. Mr. Bonner quickly starts his failing attempt to calm everyone.
"Sit down, sit down! Everything is fine!" He closed the curtains and started pushing everyone away from the door. "Wait to see what they say."
As if perfectly timed, the already familiar click plays again and a voice that wasn't the principal's comes out-
"Attention students and faculty, please remain calm. I repeat, please remain calm. The school is going under lockdown. Please gather all of your belongings as quickly as possible, and report to the gymnasium. Report to the gymnasium. This is not a drill. Such a wiry voice. Smooth and robotic.
Everyone starts pushing their way out of the room, as I started grabbing my bags and searching around the room for left behind stuff. Always alert.
I wonder if this counts as an emergency...I guess it's close enough. I walk outside the room and look around as the hallways are already getting congested, and I push my way towards Salad's locker. Hayden. Eric. Zane. Iris. Mia. Blake. Crow. Of course I'm the last one here except for the vegetable mix themselves.
I start pacing the floor while we wait, thinking about what could happen, what might be happening, what most likely is happening. Chances are some construction machine blew something and it'll be fixed by the end of the day.
But then... Why being moved to the gym and the weird voice? Just as I started to worry more and more, Salads turned the corner and headed straight to us. Staring at something behind us. Nothing was there a second ago. For my own sake I decide not to look.
Salads is no doubt looking over everyone, and I'm retreating into my own cave of thoughts again.
What happens now?
"What's the plan now?" I ask as Salads is packing stuff into their bag. While they're packing they pull out an almost unmistakable hat and I sigh under my breath and smirk a bit, rolling my eyes when they look at me.
"I don't really know yet, but I know it's gonna be fun."
Just the Salads I know.
PAUSE.
So you can already tell that this was going to be all sorts of trouble.
Just every which way.
But it would still get worse.
