The old clock shop had once been the happiest place in town.
Every wall was covered in clocks of every shape and size. Grandfather repaired them with gentle hands while Grandmother hummed old songs. Their granddaughter, Tammi, spent her afternoons sorting gears and listening to the endless chorus of tick... tick... tick...
The townsfolk knew her as the quiet clockmaker's daughter.
Not everyone was kind.
A group of bullies mocked Tammi for her love of clocks and strange inventions. One rainy evening, they decided to scare her. They tossed a lantern through the shop window before running away laughing.
The flames spread faster than anyone imagined.
By the time Tammi reached the shop, it was engulfed in fire. She screamed for her grandparents, but only the crackling flames answered.
The bullies fled toward the rocky canyon outside town.
Blinded by grief, Tammi chased them.
No one knows exactly what happened next.
Some say she climbed impossibly fast across the canyon walls. Others claim the clocks themselves guided her. When the frightened bullies looked up, Tammi was standing on a narrow ledge directly above them.
The cliff gave way.
Rock after rock crashed into the canyon below.
When the dust settled, the only sound was the echo of snapping stone... and snapping bones.
Tammi walked away without saying a word.
Years later, travelers tell stories of a young woman with bright green eyes, her short hair tied neatly back, wearing a beaded blouse, brown slacks, and worn black slip-ons. They say she wanders abandoned roads carrying an old pocket watch that never keeps the correct time.
If you hear a steady ticking in the middle of nowhere, don't follow it.
And if the ticking suddenly stops...
...don't look up.
By then, Tammi Tic-Toc may already be standing above you, smiling as she listens for the sound she loves most.
