A rumbling, gurgled growl echoed from behind me and I hunched down, almost by a force not of my own, as the lumbering creature hurtled over me.
"Connor!" Stephanie called out to me, but her voice echoed around in my head and sounded as if she was calling from a thousand miles away.
Just relax, just stop and stabilise yourself. Take in a deep breath. Ah, no don't do that it stinks, I can't breathe. I forced myself to steady my head, gripping the spinning, swirling mass with imaginary iron claws.
Okay, I can think straight now.
I peeled my eyes open, still blurry with tears I fluttered to try and rid of the speckles of water. I shook my head, each motion stinging but my head remained clear, as did my eyes.
Now I can see.
And I saw Stephanie running from the Belu. She was agile enough, leaping and dodging the massive, razor claws that threatened to rip her to ribbons. I wanted to call out and help her, but my body still remained frozen.
Then she tripped.
Face first into the concrete with a light thump, scratching across the blackened tar. She grazed herself, desperately trying to pull herself up. She wasn't quick enough and the Belu crashed on top of her, crushing her with a giant claw. It snarled as she groaned under the weight of it, the beast seemingly playing with its prey.
In an instant, my body kicked into action.
If I was frozen before, then I had just been spat on, eaten, coughed up and spat on again by an ancient fire dragon from the hottest, awfullest part of Hell.
Everything was go, go, go, as my body jumped into overdrive and without even thinking I took off, rushing towards Stephanie as the Belu was beginning to get bored with it's catch.
It raised its ghastly paws, claws extending out like pincers, readying to take the killing blow.
Crash!
I hurtled into the side of the Belu with as much force as my burning body could muster. It snarled, throwing off its balance as it steadied itself. It raised it's head, baring it's teeth with a blood-curdling growl, but I didn't move, I couldn't. I stared back, matching the dark ferocity with my own strength of will.
I would fight this thing, I would put it out of it's misery.
It roared, spit flying across from me. Stephanie had scrambled out of the way, clutching her chest and limping to a safe wall.
I yelled in return, raising Fortis above me and charging straight into the Belu.
No fear, no fear.
It leapt from the ground, forearms outstretched as its powerful hind legs propelled itself towards me.
Okay, maybe a little fear.
I ducked, raising my sword above me as the Belu cut through the blade.
The friction shook my hands, I dug my feet into the ground as the creature's substance dripped down my arms from it's open stomach. With another loud crash, it was on the ground. Claws screeching like a demonic choir of banshees as it swivelled for another attack. The pavement was coated in the cursed ink, slipping and pooling across the street. It flowed out from the open stomach like a waterfall, but the Belu didn't even seem to care.
Slice a body part, yes. I have to cut off a limb, slicing won't work...
With another roar, the Belu readied to jump.
It was lumbering and clumsy, it only can only leap to move and with its strength, it gets stuck in the ground. Okay, I think I have a plan, maybe.
