All he could see was clouded by doubts. He never really meant to do all these things. But he was so much overwhelmed and Micah seemed so confident... so he made the mistake of listening to him. Arthur wasn't helping as well. Playing and hiding things behind his back. He didn't know what to do. He panicked. So he left. Anyway none of them deserved his help. But then Micah came back to him. With more money. He thought that this time was the one. But then John showed up. Tired of all of this, he killed Micah. Was it the right choice ?... yes. No ? He doubted. He was still thinking of Arthur. It was the first time he saw him so weak that night on the mountain. Dutch was thinking of all that on his way to God knows where. But he had one intention. Rebuild the Van Der Linde gang. His gang. The others were all traitors anyway. Even Micah. He sighed, his eyes lowering to the ground. He was hungry. Very hungry. He then heard a small squeak in the distance. His eyes narrowed, trying to find the origin of the noise. He couldn't see anything. The squeak then turned into a cry. Someone was crying. Not an adult. It sounded more like a child. No, a baby ! Dutch got down of his white horse and slowly approached. Maybe it was a trap... maybe that baby was here only to have him approach. Oh whatever. He had already lost everything. He finally find the baby behind some bushes. The child was facing him and was in a metal box. His cries sounded weak and he looked sick. Dutch shook his head. It was too late for that little boy. Dutch turned away and suddenly, the cries ended and only small cooing noises were heard. Dutch slowly turned back to face the child. Those eyes... they were fixing him... piercing his soul and stabbing his chest. Those green/blue eyes that were tattooed in his mind. He reminded when he saw those eyes, begging him to understand something he already understood. Screaming in agony. Pleading for peace. Empty because of the sickness. Arthur... He couldn't abandon him again. Not again. He slowly walked back to the child and kneeled next to it. It looked like a baby boy. He grabbed him and slowly headed back to his horse, staring at the baby. Surely, someone abandoned him here, waiting for some beast to take him and kill him. He would take care of him, and heal him.
"I'll call you Meghan..." he mumbled to himself, mounting his horse and trying to find a safe place. He found an abandoned house and decided to settle in. He hid his horse and took the young child inside. He settled him on the ground with a blanket. He then quickly ran to a random town and stole some milk and medicine. After killing all the people that were after him, he headed back to the house. He fed him and started to heal the young boy.
Later, Meghan was 12 years old and with Dutch, he was practicing his fighting and shooting skills. The new gang had more members, 7 in total, including Meghan and his father. Even if Dutch was present for him, Meghan felt like there was something wrong. He was acting distant with his group and even sometimes with him. There were no other kids in camp so Meghan was alone most of the time, it was boring. He would often sneak out at night even if Dutch formally ordered him to stay in camp. He even met an other kid ! His name was Jack. He was older than him but that didn't matter. The two boys were the same. They were both lone child's, forbidden to go out without permission and pretty good fighters. Jack would often show Meghan some tricks in fighting and shooting. But as the years passed, those men's soul changed. Meghan had stopped coming to see Jack and was spending more time alongside his father who was still trying to find a way out of the United States. He never changed his way. Robbing banks and trains as usual. Just like in the old times. Jack felt like he never met him. Meghan wasn't the same boy anymore. But Jack didn't know why ! He never stopped coming to that same place every weekend for almost a years, hoping to see Meghan again. It never happened. Until one night. When he was walking toward the spot, he saw a figure lightened by the moon. Jack came running and smiled of happiness. Meghan was there. He was taller than the last time he saw him, even taller than him ! He had grown into a fine men. About what ? 16 years old maybe ? Jack was really happy ! But there was no smile on Meghan's face... he looked pretty serious. Meghan told Jack that it was the last time he would see him. Jack couldn't believe his ears. After all they lived together ?! Even though he never wanted that to happen, he only wanted his best friends happiness. He only nodded and asked one question.
"Why ?"
"I've changed. I'm not the sweet lil' boy you've known years ago. I'm not... good. I'm bad Jack. I'm...— that's my choice. That's all" he said, walking away and leaving a pained and sad Jack behind.
They were like brothers and now it was all over. After a few moment, Jack went back home. One thing was sure, he would never forget the boy who was brightening his life for the past three years.
After a couple of year, everything changed. Not for the best...
