So.
Here I am.
A character in a videogame where everyone is supposed to be a bunch of shapes, but for some reason in this version of the game, we're all humans.
And, we still live and move around even when the game gets turned off. Like we actually have a life, which is sadly a lie.
We're all just here to believe we have our own lives, but we don't. We never had. And every time I try to tell anyone, the game restarts. It prevents me from telling anyone, but for some reason, is always sadistic enough to let me see what happens when I do tell someone.
Chaos, mayhem, panic, insanity... It makes me sad just to remember seeing them have a mental breakdown because of something I told them.
The funny part is no one ever remembers me when the game restarts, so there is never any point in making friends. They'll all just forget me if I slip up. Which is why I never talk.
I've learned sign language just so I can convince people that I'm mute. I haven't heard my own voice in what seems like years. But I guess that doesn't really matter.
Sigh... Anyway, you might be wondering, "Why haven't the developers deleted your code from the game if you make it reset all the time?" And honestly, I don't know.
My theory is that they were going to make me one of the side characters, but for some reason decided against it. And they never bothered to remove my code. But like I said, I don't know if that's the actual reason.
I'm so incomplete that I don't even have a gender... Oh well, I don't need one anyway.
Really, living like this was torture.
At least, until I met Cube.

Since Paradise is a huge city, there are lots to do, and lots of opportunities. So, I decided to get a job at the S.U.N.S.H.I.N.E. Institution. Weird name, I know, but they're always looking for more people to hire.
"A place where even the weirdest individuals are welcome!"
Can't say I don't fit in here, me not talking never bothered anyone. Not even the head of the department I was in, who, for some reason took an interest in me.
Don't get me wrong, he's very shy but once he starts talking his personality changes. In a good way, I mean. And as you might've guessed, the head of the nature department is non-other then Cube.
He's very nice. Almost a bit too nice, but I like that about him.
It started with a simple "Good morning (L/N)!", then it grew into some small talk, on his side at least. And then we started hanging out after work. We go grab a cup of coffee, visit each others house, we're so close that he even got me a promotion multiple times.
And even though I was always afraid of getting attached, but, it happened. And I went along with it since it seemed to make both of us happy.
Something that always struck me as weird though, was the fact that the players were nowhere to be found in this version of the game. I watched from the sidelines and saw them defeat that Blixer guy, but now? Gone. Nowhere to be found.
Every time I ask Cube about it, his ears go down and his expression goes sad, and he goes completely silent. From what I could tell, in this version of the game, Cube adopted the players as his own children and named them Dash, Tracer, Bolt, and Sonic.
One time he started crying too, those weird black tears falling down his cheeks...
We don't "Talk" about that any more...
One day, he seemed sadder than usual, so I invited him over for a coffee, to which he accepted. I was hoping I could somehow help him through whatever was troubling him. Whether it was the players or some other problem.
I felt kinda bad waiting at home and watching the rain fall down, knowing he normally walked to my house when I invited him over. I saw him having his head down while walking up to my door, but before he got the chance to knock, I open the door. He was completely soaked in rain but still made an attempt to smile.
>>G-good afternoon (Y/N)..<< He greeted, his voice shaking. I could tell he was freezing.
I pulled him inside to which he yelped in response. I sat him down on the couch and went to grab a towel he could use to dry off, maybe offer him some dry clothes as well.
I return and see him sitting there, waiting patiently for my return. He was holding onto his arms and rubbing them, trying to regain heat in his body. Once he saw I had returned, a smile appeared on his lips and he looked up at me gently.
I wrap the towel around him and he seemed pleasantly surprised. I hold the spare clothes out to him but he shook his hand from side to side and said >>No no... You don't need to give me dry clothes, I'm sure the towel will soak up all the water in my clothes.<<
I sigh and comply, after all, I wasn't going to force him to put the clothes on, so I put them away again. I had made some coffee beforehand just the way he liked it. He mostly drank it black but he told me he personally liked it better with cream and sugar.
I handed the warm cup of coffee him and a gentle blush crept onto his cheeks.
>>Ah, thank you (Y/N)...<<
I sat next to him and we both started sipping on our hot beverages. He looked slightly better than this morning, but I felt like I could do more. He didn't know sign language too well but he always made an attempt to learn it so he could communicate with me.
So I signed the words: "Are you okay?" and tilted my head slightly. It was simple enough for him to understand. He looked away from me for a second and sighed, then looked back at me.
>>Thank you for asking (Y/N)... I'm not comfortable with telling the entire story, but something very personal happened and.. Well, all I can say is I'm glad you asked me over... I really needed this...<< The blush that had crept onto his cheeks got a bit more noticeable as he said the last part.
I smiled and wrapped my arms around him and hugged him, as a way of saying "You're welcome/Anytime buddy". It only took a few minutes from him to wrap his arms around me and hold me tightly. Not too tightly, of course, he's always gentle when it comes to physical touch.
Man, we're not even real yet he still has some kind of a pain to go through almost every day... I pulled away from the hug and signed again: "I'm always here for you."
He chuckled gently and held my right hand, which is when I noticed a small black tear rolling down his cheek.
>>Thank you... (Y/N)..<<
