Scarlett Martin was a hundred percent sure that the principal of Beacon Hill High School was the dumbest person she’d ever met.

Scarlett and her mother, Natalie, were sitting in front of Principal Thomas at seven o’clock in the morning to discuss what classes she would be taking. Here’s the twist: Scarlett was meant to be in Eight Grade but the teachers (and her mother by some extent) had had enough of her being five times smarter than them on a good day.

“Ms Martin will be taking all her classes with the sophomores this year and when the students her age start next year, she’ll transfer to a few of the freshman classes.” Principal Thomas informed her mother.

Natalie nodded, about to ask another question before Scarlett butted in. “Why can’t I continue to take classes with the sophomores when they become juniors?”

Thomas stuttered before fixing the glasses on his beaky nose. “Well, we want you to be able to interact with kids your own age.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Scarlett.” Her mother scolded. Scarlett couldn’t help herself.

“What?” she said. “If you’re forcing me to skip two full years of schooling, you might as well just continue teaching me with them.” The teacher was stuttering again. “What’s wrong Mr Rooney? Cat got your tongue?”

“Scarlett!” her mother exclaimed.

Scarlett had that effect on people.  She had the looks and fashion sense of her sister, Lydia, and her mother, but while Lydia liked to ignore people that weren’t cool enough to talk to her, Scarlett just didn’t have any manners. It brought her mother almost to tears when she had been called to Scarlett’s last principal for name calling. Looking back on it now, Scarlett could see why her mother was so upset that Scarlett had stood in front of her class and said “Tiffany is a deucedly reprehensible nincompoop and a monstrous maliciously malodorous mass of neuroses and pathologies." Scarlett had been very upset that Tiffany had stolen her ideas for their science speech, obviously.

That was what caused her to be pushed up two grades.

Of course, Principal Thomas hadn’t expected her to have such a smart mouth. What forty year old male divorcee with serious BO problems would expect a fifteen year old girl in a peter pan collared lace, long sleeve shirt, a blue plaid skater skirt, Mary Jane heels and knee high socks with a warm red trench coat over her arm, to be able to string together a sentence with more than five syllables? Not him, that’s for sure.

“Umm…. I….. Ms Martin, how about you let your mother and I talk. School starts soon and we wouldn’t want you to miss the start of class.” Thomas choked out.

“You’re right sir. Wouldn’t want to miss class. Not at 7:10 in the morning.”

Scarlett nodded sarcastically and took the class schedule and map from Principal Thomas.

As she kissed her mother on the cheek, Natalie said, “Lydia’s waiting for you by the car. She wanted to walk inside with you.”

“I’m sure she did.” Scarlett muttered, walking out of the room. Over her shoulder she said loud enough for the Principal to hear, “I like you, Principal Thomas. I just wish I had a lower IQ to enjoy your company.”

Scarlett flipped the collar down on her coat as she walked down the school steps. Is was the beginning of autumn and it was already freezing outside. Scarlett wished Lydia had let her wear pants, but when she’d walked out of her room this morning, Lydia had simply said ‘no’ and pushed her back in.
