Today was supposed to start like any other morning. I was supposed to wake up at 7, get ready for school, walk to CJs, the coffee shop about a block from my high school, and get my normal dose of caffeine to keep me from passing out on my geometry book, then walk to school. That's how every morning is for me, and for the most part, my whole day is nothing out of the ordinary. Every day is the same thing over and over. To be honest, I'm either waiting to be the next Superman and find out I've been sent to Earth from an unknown planet and discover my hidden powers, or die. Big shocker, Jason Harvey is tired of being average! Well, was tired of it. What happened this morning was anything but average.
Now, I know I describe my life to be in the situation where anything would make it interesting. I schedule my day differently, The barista actually spells my name right on my coffee cup, I win a bit of cash off a lottery card. But what happened. Let's just say I thought I would have had a higher chance of getting struck by lightning than being in the position I was in. I remember it so clearly, though it happened so fast.
I was at CJs, waiting for my order, pretending to text someone so I wouldn't look like a loner. All of a sudden, a tall boy in black clothes, fair skinned like me, and black haired busts through the door of the small coffee shop as if it wouldn't open if he tried like a normal person. Glass from the door was now smashed on the floor, sparkling like diamond shards in the now highly exposed sunlight. He bolted to the cashier demanding money from the register and saying that no one in the shop leaves. The cashier complied as well as the cowering customers, though it doesn't seem like the criminal was armed. When the police came to the frazzled scene, the boy looked stuck, like he was failing to think on his feet. I was still next to the pick-up table as if getting my coffee was my main priority in that moment, but I think I was frozen in fear. The boy's eyes met mine as it appeared I was the closest to him. It only takes a second before he grabs me and holds me as a shield, blocking his body from the armed policemen, and I, for some reason despite how terrified I was, didn't dare cry for help.
