Wandering through Srorst Forest Aspen noticed that all ambient noise from the trees around her has paused. Almost as if someone has flipped a switch. Thinking something was off she stepped backwards. The sounds resumed. Stepped forward, the forest was quiet.
Aspen was always a curious girl, even more so as an adult. She couldn't leave a mystery unsolved.
Continuing deeper into the forest without the comforting noise of birds and insects she noticed that the light grew dimmer. Only providing enough ashy blue light for her to not trip over things. As she carefully treaded forward she came upon a half-rotten wooden path embedded, and almost hidden, in the soft leaf covered ground. Curious as always she followed the path for a while. Twisting and curving, guiding her through the dense dimly lit forest. The incline increased and she realized the path was starting to be held by thin, sturdy wooden supports. Still following the path she noticed a faint red light cast on some of the nearby trees and large angular boulders jutting out of the forest floor. At that moment she paused remembering some of the rumors surrounding this forest. There have been reports of strange sightings of long, legless creatures with jaws as nearly large as a car and scales like iron. Some believed them and never entered the forest. Others thought the reports were caused by a mix of some new drug people got their hands on. Even with this in mind she carefully walked the elevated path determined to see where it led. As she continued the red light cast on the trees became deeper, and more concentrated.
She heard rustling and cracking in the trees to her right. Soon after the sound faded away. A moment later the sounds resumed, closer this time but to her left instead. She continued walking oblivious to the danger lurking in the trees, fascinated and determined to find the source of the light. In the distance she could hear and feel a low unearthly snarl that sent shivers down her spine. She still continued forward, curiosity taking over. Overriding any sense of self preservation. More snarls rumbled through the forest, some close enough for the sound to reverberate through her chest knocking her off balance for a moment. Others far in the distance more like a rumbling hiss than a deep growl.
She continued hurriedly walking along the path when she burst through the treeline into a clearing. In the center where the wooden path led up and around; it had a large churning, root covered mass marbled in bright and deep red shades, from the center an almost orange glow seeped through the almost gelatinous mass. Every once in awhile you could see reptilian shapes and eyes between the gnarled roots that covered it. Focusing on the churning mass she didn't notice the reptilian creatures scattered through the clearing or the guy who walked up behind her. He clamped his hand on her shoulder gripping tightly and growled into her ear "Just what do you think you are doing here? Didn't you hear the warnings from the Srorst?"
