"Please remind me again why you went to the library yesterday." Eva asked from her desk.
"You know exactly why. I already read all of this." I respond back, holding up the book I'm returning.
"Oh, so I'm totally wrong to assume it's because of Rose." she says, getting up from her writing desk.
"Who's Rose?" after, reflexively face palming from my blunder. "Ah damn, I just set myself up..."
"Yes you did!" virtually jumping out of her desk chair with enthusiasm. "Gwen, just ask her out! You are clearly crushing!" my roommate says, her casual bluntness perking out behind that excitement.
"Am I that obvious?" I can feel the pink, possibly red, exploding on my face. The dynamite response of a thousand blood vessels into one colliding reaction.
"You go there every single day it's open, which you only started to do two months ago, and whenever her name pops up your cheeks turn the same color as your tattoo!" she says, pointing to my neck, and then immediately my cheeks, confirming my thoughts.
"Is it really that bad?" I ask, feeling so embarrassed by the confrontation.
"So bad that I'm giving you an ultimatum." Eva makes her way from the desk, to where I am in this small apartment.
"Have you stolen last year's dictionary? I didn't think you knew that word." I say, backing up a bit to the wall.
"Yes, I took yours from the shelf while helping Sis out for words. Stop avoiding an answer! What are you, Aldra*?
"Do I have to? I don't have as much charisma as you."
"Yes. You don't get anywhere by bottling up emotions and not telling anyone. If I didn't go after the things I desired, would I be able to back flip?" she asks me, rhetorically. "No..."
"Would I be getting paid for writing books?" she speaks as if she were in a drama club, but never unusual for such a character.
"No, Eva, you would not be pursuing your dream job." my voice is contrasting hers so vastly, I wouldn't doubt if the neighbors thought she was having a one-man conversation.
"And would I, Evangeline Aerial Beets-Law, be best friends with the magnificent Gwenivere Debra Smith if I didn't go after what I wanted?" she asks me. If I was not best friends with her, I'd be shocked that she got louder than before.
"No, EVANGELINE AERIAL BEETS-LAW, you would not be best friends with me." I respond, with my best attempt at being as loud as her.
"Then alright. Either when you go to the library today, you ask out Rose, or tomorrow I'll ask her out for you. You know just as well as I do it is very simple for me to get her number."
I would be lying if I said I wasn't uncomfortable. Reaching out and confrontation aren't my best suits, and my best friend happens to not understand. She is the most outgoing person I can think of. When we were younger she would always be breaking some bone trying out new things, sticking up to bullying and speaking her mind. I can't fathom a time when she wasn't like this. Even through hardships like when her ex cheated on her and she had to go through all the struggles of divorce. I am not anywhere near her level. When I broke up with Ray I cried for a week, and it's hard to see things from each other's perspective.
"But what if we don't do that?" I try my best at getting out of the situation, but it doesn't seem like she'll budge, especially with such a smirk on her face.
"Good thing that's not happening. My way or the highway. Sebastian puts it perfectly. You gotta kiss the girl. So kiss the girl!"
After this moment, words do not matter. She's pushing me out the door, singing songs from The Little Mermaid, and making sure I walk down the stairs. She even is calling from the inside while I'm out, to remember she is tracking me through the car.
