Lar stopped momentarily as the crying of a child crept through the smoke and reached his ears. He contemplated running towards the safe welcoming arms of the forest or turning back to the flames which were licking up everything in its path. Hating himself for feeling soft at heart, he turned back and using the curve of his hand to block out the smoke, ran directly towards the hungry flames. He looked around cursing the hands of the smoke that snuck up and stung his eyes. Blinking several times, he willed his ears to listen deeper and sure enough, the cry came again. He followed the helpless sound and traced it to a big black barrel. Sure that the cry was coming from inside, he used the shawl he saw lying on the floor and opened the wooden door of the barrel. Hissing at the awful stench of rotten meat and stale ale, he called out,
"Is anybody in there?!". As he was about to give up and turn back, a flop of red hair made its way into his line of view. Looking more carefully, he noticed that it was a girl due to the little hills her growing breasts made on her ragged dress. Not bothering to pay any more attention, he grabbed the girl's hand and dragged them into the never ending curls of smoke. Seeing as he was not moving any faster because of the girl's limp, he picked her up and pushed her head into the crook of his neck. He tried holding his breath for a minute as he continued to run but his body was stubborn and willed for more oxygen. Taking a large gulp of smoke, he coughed rapidly until his temples drummed. He looked all around for an escape route but was met with the curling hands golden embers now sparking with rage. Deciding to follow the route to his house, he ran but the fire was hell bent on catching up to him. As he took one more step, he fell as he was not expecting the weight of a lit up tree to come crashing unto his back. Pushing the girl forward, he looked around at the now burnt up village that was home before embracing the welcoming hands of darkness.
Meanwhile, Alana, the little girl who had been saved by this mysteriously good man stopped crying when she realized that it wasn't going to help. She tried checking the man's pulse but failed due to the fact that her slender little hands couldn't wrap around his incredibly large wrists. She tried another approach as she went behind and tried to pick up the large trunk of the tree. Giving up, she sat by the man and in the way her mother taught her to, she closed her eyes and prayed to the goddess Udea.
"Oh goddess, my mother believed in you so much. Please, help this man to regain his consciousness and help us to get out of here. Please goddess, please Udea", she started sobbing once again as she realized her pleas fell unto the smoke and was crushed by the cruel embers. Helpless, she curled into a ball and lay beside her saviour for she didn't deserve to live while her saviour lay dead. Her now anguished cries ceased when she saw that she was no longer in trapped in the fire but now a safe distance away with the man by her side. Confused, she glanced around and spotted no one. Looking down, she saw that the man was now sprawled over the floor, safe, but dead. She took refuge close to the man, seeing as she  had nowhere to go. Resting her head on his cold lifeless chest, she closed her eyes as she willed sleep to come. Not a minute passed before she heard a deep rumbling sound. She raised her head only to met with a flash of blinding light. As she looked more closely at the light, she saw two figures moving around. With her heart thumping, she crouched behind the man, using him as a human shield. A shriek erupted from her mouth when she heard a thump beside her. With trembling hands and a racing heart, she looked beside her. To say she was shocked was an understatement. She brought out a miniscule figure from her pocket and examined it closely. She looked at the figure beside her and compared it to the idol  held in her hand. Was she dreaming or did the person on the floor resemble the goddess in her hand? Disbelief coursed through her body as she saw she was right. In a quiet voice, she said,
"Goddess Udea?"
