   My ears hurt. The seconds of silence do them well, I guess. Any other time, there is a bang, or a clatter, or screaming. I could go on for days. All the trauma. And to think about the poor soldiers and their families.

   I wish to be a family man. But as of now I am a small shot captain fighting a war for the sake of Amestris. My name is Hughes, Maes Hughes. I was separated from all forms of contact to friends and family. I can't think of what my roster of caring people really think about me being here.

   The occasional lunch break in out make shift base was filled with trying to make new friends. I was fascinated by one of the guys. He is cool headed, fearless man with his only weapon a pair of white gloves with a red symbol on each. That guy was state alchemist/ major Roy Mustang.

   I called him one evening. The artillery was happily quieter. I introduced myself, shared some of my goals and asked the same of him, using the alchemic rule of equivalent exchange to my advantage. He expressed his goals of some day being able to become the Fuhrer. He also said about having someone to protect. Pretty shady, even for a guy I literally forced the answers out of.

   Some days had now passed since the meet with my new friend Roy. He was powerful, really powerful. So much in fact that he was able to conjure flames by a simple click of his finger and could direct the said flames in any desired direction. I asked him his secret to this unusual sort of alchemy. He told me this,"I have the ability to make the flames with my glove, and I then direct the flame by changing the air structure around the flame".very fascinated by a scientific standard.

   The same day he revealed this to us, the fuhrer himself, mr King Bradley, have a semi-motivational speech. I was stood by Roy. He whispered throughout the entire speech about how he would crash through ranks and make it to the top. I vowed to back him up entirely. I gave him my trust, it was now time for him to give me his.
