Reason to Breathe

Friday night. I had a shift at the local bar in Santa Monica. I got a ride from my friend only if I promised her free drinks. I was in the dressing room getting my costume on, getting ready for my performance. I was ruffling through what options they had in the backroom. I had planned on what I was going to wear tonight but it wasn't here. Working here was a pain in the ass sometimes because you don't know when or who would be using a costume you were planning to use. It was first come first serve. As I was still rummaging through clothes I would find something decent but immediately remembering my body type wouldn't be able to wear that. I was always self conscious about my body.

A few minutes later I found a sheer dress with silver stars and I could just top it off to what i'm wearing. I was wearing a small black tank top and black high waisted shorts.

"Rose you're up in 5" I hear my boss call out. I was going over the lyrics again in my head so I don't mess up during the performance. My time was up and some co-workers hooked me up to a microphone . I was nervous since I've only done it once and home alone. I was going to sing and just do a dramatic walk through around the bar.

I heard the music slowly fade off letting the audience know there was going to be another performance. This time it was going to be me. The lights go off and there's only a blue dim. I count to myself "one... two... three..." I go out and I get a few claps. The DJ signals me to start.

"Tonight, I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world I'll turn it inside out, yeah
And floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now don't stop me
'Cause I'm having a good time, having a good time"

I can feel the energy from the crowd as I prance around the bar as I sing my heart out. I try to do justice to this song. I interact with people. As i'm almost about to finish the song I go on top of the bar and start walking on it trying to not spill any drinks. My friend who was at the end cleared out most of the counter and I got an idea.

For my last few lines I decided to lay down on the counter and i'm being applauded even though I haven't finished. I see my friend and turn my head towards the people sitting.

All of a sudden everything is in slow motion as I look to see a man. Not just any guy he really stood out from the crowd.

"I don't want to stop at all
La da da da daah
Da da da haa"

The smile he had on his face had the blue light reflecting right on it. Bringing out all his features.

"Ha da da ha ha haaa
Ha da daa ha da da aaa
Ooh ooh ooh"

I got up from the bar. It felt like I was in a trance. Everyone applauded as I walked to the back. He went back to talking with his friends. I've never had that feeling before...
