Long ago, in a faraway land, in the kingdom of Yuuei, something amazing has occurred. At the very same moment, two identical baby girls were born—
Nope, sorry to burst your bubble. Not exactly.
These two girls weren't born on the same day. Not even the same month, as a matter of fact (thought to give them credit, both were born in the same year). And no, did you think this was the typical, identical-girls-but-they-aren't-related-in-the-slightest route? Think again.
Let's tell the real story.
The first baby girl was named Ochako, Uraraka Ochako. Well, she's not exactly the first. Between our two heroines, Ochako's the youngest, born on the month of December on a snowy day. She was the princess of Yuuei, and was destined for greatness... well, that's what she's been told her whole life, but frankly, that's not what the princess wanted. The first time she saw a guard helping a poor beggar family from her balcony looming over the streets was also the day she decided that she wanted to spend her days helping and serving people, which served as a problem seeing as she was, er, royalty. Her parents, the King and Queen, were supportive of her dream and pleased that their daughter had such good and humble values, however, as rulers of the kingdom they were left with no choice but to discourage Ochako, saying that as a princess, the best way for her to serve her people was to be a good queen once she inherits the throne.
Which should have settled the problem if not for the fact that Ochako wanted absolutely nothing to do with the throne.
She hated her crown. Or rather, she hated the duties that came with the crown—dancing lessons (she absolutely hated heels), learning the ins and outs of politics and the laws of the kingdom (she was generally horrible at memorization), etiquette lessons (it made her uncomfortable to sit straight the whole time), wearing those ridiculous fancy dresses with those huge petticoats twenty-four-seven (she trips on them every time, and they're heavy), and finally, the grooming that's been done to her to make her an eligible bride when she comes of age (who wants to marry someone you don't love and know?)
Which is where the story's plot comes in.
So the current stuck-in-a-pit predicament of Ochako was being engaged to a young king she never met before (and still hadn't) but there's more to that later.
Let's get moving to the other heroine.
The second (first) baby girl was named Momo, Yaoyorozu Momo. Whereas the princess was born in winter, Momo was born one warm, autumn night, sometime during September. She's the pauper in this story. Well, she wouldn't have been one if her parents hadn't gone broke and met that tragic accident. The Yaoyorozu family was once a great, noble family, one that existed even before the Quirks came along. Although, little by little, the Yaoyorozu's greatness has faded over the generations and because of the wars that came and gone, Momo's mother and father was the only Yaoyorozu lineage left to see the new era of peace alive. By the time Momo was born, hardly anyone remembered the Yaoyorozu family anymore, and because of bankruptcy, Momo's parents were forced to give away their possessions and family mansion.
The day Momo discovered her Quirk was equally the best and worst day of her life. At the tender age of four years old, her family was attacked in the little house they had in the heart of the kingdom by thieves who hoped to steal valuables. The unfortunate parents had nothing for the thieves, and so they slit their throats. The thieves noticed little Momo and slit her throat too.
Or they would've slit her throat, if her Quirk hadn't developed at the exact same moment.
A metal plate had suddenly emerged from her neck where her skin was exposed, protecting her from the deadly strike. The thieves were frightened and hesitated, which was enough time for the patrolling guards to arrive and apprehend them.
Alas, poor Momo was now orphaned with only an antique locket as an heirloom and reminder of her family. What to do? Thankfully, the family that lived next door decided to take her in and raise her as their own, along with their daughter who had the same age as Momo.
So now the former noble girl is currently working as a seamstress for an abusive mistress but we'll get to that later.
With lives so different, it wasn't surprising that the princess and the pauper had never met...
But yeah, you already know the drill. It's gonna happen. Eventually.
And by "eventually", I mean right about... now.
