The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the swaying motion, followed by the calming sounds of waves crashing against a solid surface and causing the wood to creak violently.

'I'm on a ship.' Was the first thought that popped into my head. Suddenly the crashing waves didnt seem so calming. My eyes flew open as I was suddenly hit with nausea and the urge to empty my stomach. I barely took in my surroundings, my eyes landing on a wooden bucket, and let myself throw up everything I'd eaten the night before. 'But was it from last night?' Was the next thought, as i noticed all that was coming up was stomach bile. 'How long have i been sleeping?'

I vaguely remember sneaking out of my bedroom window- But why? Trying to remember what had happened only made the barely noticeable throbbing in my head a lot more noticeable and very hard to ignore. I groaned as i sat up, Rubbing at the sides of my head and closing my eyes again in a poor attempt to ease the pain.

"Finally awake, I see." An amused sounding male voice spoke after a few moments, causing me to snap my eyes back open. I immediately found myself face to face with who I'm assuming is the one who kidnapped me, leaning against the opened door to what I believed to be a holding cell. "I'm a little disappointed." He continued. "I was hoping you'd sleep just a little longer. You Elves look... Doll like... in a way. Like a child's plaything when you sleep. It's very intriguing."

There was something off about my captor. For one, I could sense a glamour. A very strong one, too. He clearly wasn't who all the other crew members on this ship believe him to be.

"Wh-" I started to speak, but i was cut off immediately.

"I know, I know." The captor waved his hands at me dismissively and began studying his face in the reflection of the cheap metal plate sitting on the only table in the cell. "Where am i?" He began in a mocking high pitched tone. "What's going on?"

'This guy really likes to hear himself talk, doesn't he?' I thought, getting really annoyed with his voice.

"Well for starters," I finally spoke up before he could continue, clearing my throat after realizing those may be the first 3 words I've spoken in days. "It looks like I'm being held captive as a prisoner of war, but considering my country isn't participating in any war that i know of, and with the fact that i am of no noble blood, I only have to guess that I'm merchandise. You're selling me- along with hundreds of others I'm assuming. And knowing for a fact that slavery is illegal in my country, we are currently on a ship headed to some foreign country where it doesn't really matter."

'My confidence is going to get me killed' I thought to myself.

"You'd do well to keep that pretty mouth of yours shut." My captor Growled. "Your insolence will get you nowhere."

"Right. Right." I feigned carelessness, even though my heart was practically in my throat at this point. "What i was going to ask," I continued, standing up and moving very stupidly close to him. I realized, my height only had the tip of my head right below his chest. My heart beat picked up, as if telling me to back off. "Before you so rudely interrupted me, is; What is someone like you doing, working on a slave ship?"

"I don't know what you're talking about." He kept a very stoic expression, but I saw the flash of surprise flicker in his eyes.

"We Elves are very gifted." I stated, flashing a defiant smile and looking up at his face, silently cursing my height as I craned my head to meet eye contact. "Others may not be able to see through your glamour, Vampire, But to Elves, Its like glamours don't even exist."

He let out a low growl, and before i had time to process what was happening, I was pinned against the wall at eye level (that's a far drop for an Elf) with him holding me there by my throat.

His face was by my ear, as to make sure Only I could hear his next words. "I swear by whatever gods you serve, If you so much as hint to anyone what I am..." I felt his fangs graze my neck as a statement for what he would do if I told anyone.

I nodded frantically, making it clear i got his message and wishing he'd release his grip so i could breathe again. "Y-Yes..." i wheezed. "I underst-"

He let go of me, allowing me to drop to the floor in a heap. I gasped for air, coughing and fighting to catch my breath as i rubbed my neck. My vision was going dark and i was growing dizzy.

"It's a shame i can't keep you for myself." I heard my captor's voice in the distance, back to its normal tone. "I like you." And once again, I was sleeping.

[FLASHBACK]

"Alaina," my mother sighed, "For the
last time, I refuse to let you leave the house tonight. I've told you time and again I've got a bad feeling about the solstice festival this year."

"But mother I've gone every year since I was of age!" I protested, clearly upset that I wouldn't be able to go this year. Especially because now that I'd had my 17th birthday, I would get to try the mead for the first time.

"I'm sorry, child." Mother shook her head. "I've just had this feeling all week that something is wrong. That new stranger in town just rubs me the wrong way."

Frustration and anger took over and I huffed loudly, turning on my heel and stomping back to my room. I was going to miss the ceremony this year. I wont become a fully blown woman until the next solstice, a year from tonight.

I was never going to live this down. None of my friends would let me. My heart skipped a beat as I made my final decision, and began getting dressed into the one outfit i had saved for this event. It was a wine red dress that matched the color of my hair and flowed smoothly to the floor, just barely touching the dusty floor boards beneath my feet. I brushed my hair out and let the gentle curls fall naturally around my shoulders, letting the points of my ears protrude from between the locks.

I decided against wearing shoes, which really wasnt a big deal considering rarely anyone in my village owned a pair. I also only had the one pair, which didnt really match what I'd decided to wear.

Finally, after checking my smile in the mirror, and inspecting my fangs to make sure no left overs from dinner were left, I quickly and very quietly left the house through my window.

A rush of adrenaline took over as my feet touched the ground below my bedroom window. 'Definitely lucky I have a bedroom on the first floor.' I giggled as I began sprinting towards the village square to meet up with my friends.
