"Aaaahh!"
Alita's screech pierced the night sky.
"Aaaahh!"
Tears rolled down her face, fist clenching as she yelled over and over again. Sitting on her bed, it was all she could do. Her heart felt as if it were tearing. She couldn't feel anything except the pain, remembering Hugo's cold metal hand slipping through hers.
Hugo. Oh how the mention of his name sent her spiraling into so many emotions. Pain, guilt, love, happiness, until pain dominated again. She missed him. She would give absolutely anything to have him beside her. Together.
"Aaaahh!"
Doctor Ido, Alita's caretaker, stood outside her door. Along with Nurse Gerhad, he could hear Alita's screams of anguish. He knew all too well the pain of losing a loved one. Remembering his own daughter, he wish Alita did not have to endure this.
Hours ago, as Alita fell through the door, he knew what happened. Or at least knew Hugo was not coming in. Alita's face as she looked up at him told him all he needed to know.
(Earlier)
"I couldn't...," was all she could muster before the pain washed over her again. Ido knelt beside her, picked her up and lead her to the couch. He wasn't sure what to say. He knew her pain, yet on a different level. But he knew she didn't need to be understood, but rather comforted. "I couldn't save him...I couldn't...save...it's all my fault...," was all he could hear between her sobs.
(Present)
Ido was unsure of wether to enter the room or not. Him and Gerhad exchanging nervous glances. It was Nurse Gerhad who ushered him towards the door, saying "She doesn't need to be alone right now." Ido understood. Alita was known to get violent and leave the house when upset. They didn't need an angry cyborg roaming the streets of Iron City. He didn't want her getting into any trouble or worse, hurt. Gently pushing against the door, Alita's screams grew louder.
"Alita?"
Alita's body trembled, surrounded by the light of the moon her tears we're easily visible. She heard Ido's voice, but didn't really care to respond. She didn't want to say anything.
"Alita...I'm sorry...about Hugo."
Her screams subsided as Hugo's named was mentioned. She felt defeated. All this pain, it was too much. How could anyone endure this? She just wanted to wake up and have this all be a dream. A bad dream. But no mattered how hard she tried, she couldn't wake. And that scared her. A world with him. Ido hugged her, cradling her in his arms he whispered, "This isn't your fault".
"It hurts Dad".
"I know sweetheart, I know."
"Why him?"
Ido shifted, knowing why and who killed Hugo.
"Nova....Nova did this."
Nova. The man behind it all. He was no king or ruler, but rather the watcher behind the eyes. He made his moves behind the curtain, a puppet master, controlling the people and perhaps, the world. And Alita was a threat to him. She wasn't controllable. And she had found him. So therefore he went to scare her. And worse, hurt her.
Alita's mind and emotions reconciled, and a feeling washed over her. One she was all too familiar with. Anger.
"Nova," she muttered. "I'm going to kill him. But before I do, I'm going to make him regret everything. I'm going to rip his arms off. Tear the skin off his body and..."
"Alita...," Ido interrupted. The shock in his eyes told Alita he was all too afraid. But she knew what she had to do. Destroy Zalem. She remembered those words from the girl in her flashbacks.
Glaring into Ido's eyes she solemnly said, "I'm going to bring that whole place down."
Unsure of what to say, Ido remained silent and together they stared out her window. The view of the city of Zalem resting above their heads.
