"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the Intergalactic School of Peace and Foreign Communications!"

The upperclassmen cheered while the freshmen stayed quiet, a little overwhelmed by their new surroundings. Carswell Thorne elbowed Iko Linh and pointed, laughing, at a group of intimidated freshmen. "Why are they so scared? It's just school."

Cinder Linh, who was sitting on Iko's other side, rolled her eyes and scoffed, "Don't act like you weren't scared when you started out, Thorne. You're the biggest baby out of all of us."

"Whatever, Cinder, you're just jealous cause I fit in so quick." Thorne retorted.

"Shut up, guys. Ms. Altair is talking." Iko interjected.

"-three new teachers this year!" Ms. Altair continued. "Meet Mr. Beauregard, Ms. Altonia, and Mrs. Benison. Mr. Beauregard will be teaching English, Ms. Altonia will be our new science teacher, and Mrs. Benison will be teaching Physical Education. Upperclassmen, you are dismissed, please go find your advisors from last year and they will give you further directions. Freshmen, please stay seated so we can continue with orientation." Iko and her two friends stood up to head to their respective advisories.

"See y'all later," She called to Thorne and Cinder. She sauntered over to her advisory where her friend Emilie was standing. "Sup, Em. How's it going?"

"Horribly. I just found out I don't have Mr. Beauregard for English. I'm so upset! Did you see how hot he is?" Emilie swooned.

"Is he the new teacher? I didn't see him, I was too far." Iko replied.

"Well, take my word for it. Go get your schedule from Mr. Hesperos. I wanna see if we have any classes together." Emilie nudged Iko with her shoulder. Iko got her schedule from their advisor and looked at it. Science with Ms. Helene. Math with Mr. Pollux. Emilie squealed and pointed at the second to last class.

"You have him! Oh, Iko you are SOOO lucky!" Emilie grasped Iko's arm. "You have got to tell me how his class is. Give me daily reports."

"You're crazy, Emilie." The bell rang for first period. Iko scanned the hallway. She saw kids she knew from freshman year as well as some new freshmen looking absolutely overwhelmed. Then she spotted someone who made her heart stop, and not in a good way. Liam Kinney. Her nemesis. Iko hoped she could at least make her entire first day without seeing him, but obviously that was not going to happen. He was at his locker chatting with another boy. Iko couldn't see who the boy was because he was facing away from her. Whoever he was, he was probably a jerk anyway. Iko looked away from them and kept walking.

"See ya later, Kinney," called a familiar voice. Iko snapped her head back to where she saw the pair a moment ago. Thorne was walking away from Liam's locker. Iko's jaw dropped. She stormed up to Thorne and punched his arm. "Ow! What was that for?" He yelped.

"Were you not just talking to Kinney a moment ago? My least favorite person on the planet?"

"Aw, chillax, Iko. I think you made your judgments about him too quickly."

"Too quickly?!" She practically screeched. "He bullied me for YEARS in elementary school and middle school. He HATES people like me?"

"Iko, I'm sorry but we're both trying out for the lacrosse team tomorrow and I thought I should make friends with my future teammates."

"That's if you even make the team, Thorne."

"Hey-"

"Whatever, I'm going to class." Iko huffed and walked away. She couldn't believe Thorne would have the audacity to be friends with someone he knew she hated. She went to Chemistry and sat down in the first seat she saw. Cinder came in a moment later.

"Iko! I'm so glad we have science together!" Cinder smiled.

"Yay! I'm glad too!" Iko replied. Cinder dropped her stuff on the desk next to Iko's and sat down. Cinder looked around and spotted their friend, Cress, sitting a few seats away.

"Hey, Cress! Come sit with me and Iko," Cress smiled and walked over to the pair.

"How were your summers?" She asked.

"We visited the American Republic with Kai! It was so cool! What'd you and Thorne do?" Iko asked.

"We traveled the Eastern Commonwealth. Neither of us had been here for very long so we'd only seen pieces of it but now we've seen a ton and I love it here!"

"That's great! It's so nice here." Cinder responded. The lesson started and the class settled down.

~After school~

Iko and Cinder met afterschool by Iko's locker. "Oh, Cinder, did I tell you who I saw Thorne hanging out with earlier?"

"No, who?"

"Kinney."

Cinder dropped her jaw in over-dramatized shock. "No. Way. How dare he make friends?"

Iko pushed Cinder gently. "Come on, Cinder. You know I hate Kinney."

"I know, I know. C'mon, let's go get some food."
